Quasi-Experimental Article

Janse, B., Huijsman, R., and Fabbricotti, I., 2014. A quasi-experimental study of the effects of integrated care intervention for the frail elderly on informal caregivers’ satisfaction with care and support. BMC Health Services Research, 14(1). doi: 10.1186/1472-6963-14-140

The article is quasi-experimental as it looks at the casual relationship on the effects of an integrated care model for the frail elderly on informal caregivers’ satisfaction with care and support services. A population of 63 participants who were caregivers was used for the study.

Non-Experimental Article

Eun-Kyung Kim, Sun-Mi Lee, Eunpyo Lee, & Mi-ran Eom. (2009). Comparison of the predictive validity among pressure ulcer risk assessment scales for surgical ICU patients. Australian Journal of Advanced Nursing, 26(4), 87–94. doi: 10.1891/1748-6254.5.3.75

The article is a non-experimental study that compares three pressure ulcer risk scales. These include the Braden, Song, and Choi, and Cubbin and Jackson scales, with the researchers aiming at which of the three risk calculators is the most appropriate for predicting pressure risk for surgical ICU patients. In this correlational design, the Cubbin-Jackson scale was deemed the most suitable.

Experimental research is conducted to set up an experiment to evaluate phenomena such as treatment and drug interventions. It is also called a randomized trial (Thompson and Panacek, 2006). For instance, if it is a drug experiment, some participants are given the drugs in questions, and others are not, and the progress made is noted among the two groups. In this case, one group receives the experiment. A quasi-experimental evaluates why things happen (Helbig, 2018). As opposed to randomization, this research looks at the casual relationship between research outcomes. For instance, it might assess the causal relationship between receiving treatment and not receiving the treatment in question. Non-experimental research, on its part, is a correlational design that looks at the relationship between variables (Helbig, 2018). Instead of evaluating the treatment line in the case of a quasi-experiment, there is variables’ manipulation to assess outcome correlations.
