Topic: The impacts of the government education policies on the enrollment and performance level of students in institutions of higher learning
Introduction
The primary aim of government policies on education sector is to enhance quality of education and increase literacy level (Tham, 2013). This paper presents a NetLogo model that examines the relationship between government education policies and enrollment and performance level of students in institutions of higher learning. This relationship is often unstable when there are unfavorable government education policies which discourage enrolment and performance of students. This leads to increase in social vices such as crime, prostitution, etc., as many students drop out or fail to join institutions of higher learning hence engage in these social vices. On the other hand, this relationship is often stable when there are favorable policies which act as incentives for students to enroll and perform well in higher education. Such favorable government policies include quality of schools, educators, access to financing (like student loans), etc (Spring, 2011). This research project uses a NetLogo simulation to elaborate how government policies impact on the enrolment and performance level of students in institutions of higher learning.
Purpose of the Research Study
The purpose of this research project is to examine how government education policies impact on the enrollment and performance level of students in institutions of higher learning
Research questions
- How do government policies in education system sector affect the number of students who enroll in higher learning institutions?
- How do government policies in education sector affect the performance of the students in institutions of higher learning?
- How do college/university drop outs contribute to rise in social vices such as crime, prostitution, etc?
The Hypothesis of the Study
This research study hypothesizes that "there is a direct relationship between government policies in the education sector and enrollment and performance of students".
Research Methodology
This research study will use the NetLogo software to find out through simulation how the government policies impact on the enrolment and performance level of students in institutions of higher learning. The agents to be used in this simulation are "student" and "social-vice". The simulation will work by assuming that favorable government policies encourage students to enroll and perform better while unfavorable government policies discourage students from enrolling and performing in the institutions of higher learning. When there is less enrollment and poor performance, social vices may rise since the college/university drop outs will engage in these social vices such as crime.
