Name of the condition: Hypothyroidism
Definition of Hypothyroidism: It also referred to as the underactive disorder where a persons' thyroid gland cannot produce enough thyroid hormone making the patients experience the signs of slow body metabolism. The individuals with this condition have high cholesterol, are sensitive to cold, experience a memory decline and weight gain.
Name of the drug: Synthetic thyroid hormones (levothyroxine)
Brand name: Levothroid, Levoxyl, Levo-T
What the medication is prescribed for: To restore the levels of hormones through reversal of the conditions signs and symptoms. The drug minimizes the cholesterol levels in the person's body leading to the loss in body weight.
Dosage warnings: Individuals with the normal functioning of the thyroid are not supposed to use levothyroxine. Also, women who are on long-term therapy for levothyroxine are at a higher risk of having osteoporosis leading to the reduction in the bone mineral density.
Information, the patient, can share with the doctor before taking the drug: If they have heart disease, diabetes, chest pain, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, blood-clotting disorder and hepatitis (Li, He, Bansal& Hennessey, 2016). The older adults tend to be at a higher risk of suffering from the heart diseases thus making the patient to share some of the private information like age.
Risk factors of hypothyroidism: The crucial elements which pose the risk of suffering from hypothyroidism are their age and sex. The young people and the elderly are more susceptible to this condition than the middle-aged people. Also, a higher number of women experience this condition more than men. In a society, women aged fifty years and above are at a higher risk of suffering from this condition than men. Also, individuals who have a genetic history of the disease and the ones with the rheumatoid arthritis are at the risk of suffering from this condition (Ahn, Sohn& Jeon, 2016). The condition can also affect those who have taken the anti-thyroid treatment or those who have ever had thyroid surgery.
Side effects associated with hypothyroidism: The synthetic thyroid hormones hasten the heartbeat making the blood pressure to go high. Due to continuous consumption of these drugs the patient is sensitive to heat thus sweating profusely. The patient also feels nervous and has lots of anxiety and hunger. One might look tired and weary due to loss of energy (McKnight, Geddes& Goodwin, 2017). After the patient consumes Synthroid for the first few months, there is partial hair loss and the person experiences partial skin rashes.
Contradictions of the Prescribed Prescriptions: The synthetic thyroid hormones cannot be absorbed appropriately when one has eaten since it requires one to have an empty stomach. The patient should wait for 45to 60 minutes before consuming anything to allow the prescriptions to be absorbed in the bloodstream. Also, the drugs are not supposed to be taken with other drugs since they interfere with their absorption (McKnight et al., 2017). Example of medicines which are not accompanied by these hypothyroidism drugs are the antacids, iron supplements, and cholesterol drugs.
