Introduction
As technology changes, so do the way we live and the way people at the workplace work and associate with each other. Technology has changed the way we communicate and interact with each other. Before the advent of mobile phones, people had to wait for a person to get home or to the office if they wanted to call them. However, mobile phones have made it possible for people to community easily and at any time. The advent of the internet has also made communication easy (Drucker 2016). People can call their friends, family members or associate from a long distance at little cost. There is also the possibility of using video calls to keep in touch. The introduction of social media sites has also changed the way people interact. Previously, a person had to wait to meet with another individual to catch up about what they have been doing. However, social media sites such as Facebook have enabled people to keep in touch through its easy connectivity platform (Chew 2015). Unfortunately, social media and the internet have made people less social than before. It is common to see people glued to their smartphones in the trains, on the parks or while walking. Some people have also been less active because of the available entertainment opportunities available through the gadgets. People can stay at home and play video games or watch movies online without the need to get up and order the movies or go to the shop to buy the movies. The lifestyle has made people comfortable in the sedentary lifestyle, which has had an adverse effect on their health. People are increasingly becoming obese because of this kind of lifestyle.
Technology has also had a significant effect on the workplace over the past couple of years. The working environment of today is completely different from what the work environment used to be before the advent and advancement of technology. Technology has enabled employees to interact with clients and other co-workers globally. The work environment is not limited to the office. People from long distances can communicate through emails or conference call and conduct official business. Additionally, technology has enabled people to carry with them their work as they travel or even work at home (Drucker 2016). There are jobs that do not require people to go to the office and the trend has been steadily gaining momentum. Employees have also been more productive and efficient. The way people spend their time has shifted with the advent of new technology. People are left with more time to concentrate on things that are more important with technology doing some of the work that was previously done by humans.
Technology has also enhanced collaboration due to the ability to connect with fellow employees at any time in a short period. The ability to communicate and collaborate has led to an increase in flexibility in the workplace. Employees' partnership has been improved because communication is not affected by the distance of a co-worker. There is also an increase and a boosting of teamwork and the way people solve issues (Chew 2015). The introduction of different software has also improved cost management in the office. The use of technology in different spheres such as accounting and production has ensured there is little wastage of resources. The ability to reduce waste has led to increased profitability and rapid expansion of businesses.
