Introduction

The AEMP was established in the year 2013 when the crisis of the San Francisco eviction was at the peak. The leading cause for the formation of the body was for the publishing of digital maps and the analysis of the data eviction data. It was formed as a countermeasure to the problems affecting land use at the moment due to the eviction process. The body, together with other players in the sector, were counter-mapping the San Francisco contemporary tech boom, which is thought to have happened after the 2008 crisis. Counter mapping seeks to answer the questions of why, how, and with whom maps are made. Counter mapping by AEMP aims to raise awareness of the mapping project without any bias from racist, feministic, or any other form of prejudiced opinion which seems to undermine the process of digital maps and eviction data (Manissa & Erin 2018).

Oral history toward collective resistance inspired the AEMP to come up with the NDR project tasked with the recording of community and life histories to share knowledge from different perspectives. The project became a collective history of the community's life and struggles and resistance to the San Francisco population documenting their political and social transformations over the years. There is also the aspect of placemaking, which forms an integral part of the social justice job. A geographical significance is related to each struggle for justice. It is, therefore, important that the matters be settled amicably for the benefit of the standard population.

The AEMP and the NDR projects are multi-purposed projects to better the community as far as the mapping and social justice are concerned. Some of the questions raised while working on the two projects include why and how will the digital mapping and the place mapping strengthen the sociopolitical change much required in the state of San Francisco? Through the process, there were so many answers, and the projects led to the realization of a wide range of possibilities for the success of the vision. Social justice is for the greater good, and thus any approach that seems to affect it should be embraced wholly.

Counter Mapping Migration: Irregular Migrations Stories Through Cognitive Mapping

Maps are considered tools to represent partial knowledge and say a thing or two about the social order of a particular place. Mapping experience seeks to incorporate a person's adventure into the aspect of storytelling of a home. Cognitive mapping enables the producers and the recipient to see the map and the story through the lenses of the participant. It thus deepens the understanding, and the knowledge about the enforcement and the visualization of the experience lived. They talk and delve more on the micro-political issues that affect the mapping of a place, for instance, the minor discourses that are described through individual experiences (Amalia 2018).

Irregular immigrants offer a challenge to the systematic blocking of their stories in the regime of migration through their counter-mapping. It questions the security of the immigrants while on transit from the country of origin into the country destination. The provision moves with the trans-migrants through the borders that they cross and through all the decisions they make. Counter mapping, therefore, builds its relevancy on its ability to focus on the mobility and marginality stories that are hard to find in the usual official cartographies. They also assist in the questioning of the functionality of the borders apart from being static structures on the ground. Counter mapping also aims at unearthing the challenges that the immigrants face in the hands of the border officers whose aim is to discourage the immigrants from moving to their destination countries.
