Introduction
High school students have increasingly faced challenges that include drug usage, theft, and school security. Many schools have employed different strategies that aim at mitigating these unwanted behaviors depicted by students. The main purpose of every school is to provide a conducive environment for students to exploit their potentials and capabilities through shaping their behaviors and providing proper facilities. Drug usage among the students is one of the main distractors that barred them from attaining their goals. It is the responsibility of the schools, therefore, to ensure that students are free from drug usage through developments of policies that enhance prevention and avoidance. In order to uphold this, some schools employed the use of drug-sniffing dogs by the police in order to detect the presence of drugs within the students. The sniffing dogs search on student's properties that include and not limited to lockers, boxes, and even clothes.
Drug sniffing dogs are the most effective and efficient method of detecting drugs since the dogs are well trained and use smell to identify if there is any drug quickly. Therefore, the method saves time. Moreover, the method is able to detect drugs hidden even in an enclosed place with ease because they maximize only the use of smell. Also, the method is legally allowed since the students do not have a substantial reason for privacy in school. Additionally, the American court supports the fact that schools have the responsibility of ensuring a drug-free environment within the students and the school at large. Therefore, any methodology use, including Drugs sniffing dogs, is legal since the interest behind the action is to uphold a free-drug environment, which is one of the school responsibilities. As far as the quality and the size of work is concerned, this method covers many students within a very short time and moreover their work is thorough.
However, the use of drug-sniffing dogs, in essence, is very costly to the school to hire. Therefore, it takes away the resources that could have been used to add more facilities to the school. Furthermore, the method is noted to have false alerts hence leading to unreliable searches. This may also lead to a false allegation that may result in unjustified consequences to an innocent student. Notably, the process of conducting this search is characterized by harassment and intimidation; this causes human embarrassment and humiliation. In regard to the constitutionalism of this method, it's noted that the method infringes on the constitutionals right of an individual's privacy. According to the ruling of Washington Supreme Court, they held that it is against the constitution to search every student or to consider every student a suspect without individualized suspicion of each person searched. This means, therefore, that it is unconstitutional to employ this method to individuals who are innocent; instead, suspicion should precede the search on an individual.
Conclusion
In summary, the fundamental benefits of search as far as drug usage within students are concerned are to ensure free drug usage within students. This will enable the students to focus on their school performance and help realize their full potential. Drug-sniffing dog is one of the methods noted to achieve this task, and comparatively, it has more advantages and benefits; hence schools should adopt this method is dealing with drug detection within students.
