People have a different description of what college life is. Ideally, those who have not joined college have a made-up mentality of what their college life would look like. College life is best known as years, worth remembering in a person's life; thus, the freshmen and women on the campuses have very great anticipations. Studies assert that college life exposes people to new experiences and ideas that they do not know before. In the recent past, there have been unending discussions about online colleges. Having been enrolled in one of the online colleges, I became susceptible to these discussions. These discussions built a mentality in me that online colleges' curriculum is hard and "different" from the traditional university's courses. However, when I joined the college, the thing was, and have continued to be different from my made-up mentality. Thus, the paper below compares what I thought would be like in college and how it is today.
Due to the made-up mentality, I believed that online colleges are hard and hostile to students. I was confused as to how I could get familiar with the courses offered in the college. Ideally, I believed that the students would register the courses independently and get the learning materials from the webcams and zoom calls that I had just learned how to use. However, to my surprise, the first week of the school was mostly about syllabus orientation. The teachers took us through the course outline that we were going to learn for the rest of the semester. In essence, the teachers took us through the syllabuses in MAT-1070, which was college algebra, BE 1060-how to build college success, and BE 1200-engineering drawing. Thus, it turns out to be so different from what I expected to start the semester with lots of pressure, but the lecturers took us through the courses' outline first.
Moreover, I thought that I would do more of writing in school, which is why I had arranged all my books for my classes before my first week at school. I also thought that that English would be amongst the first courses that I will do in my first week, that is why I bought my English book. However, to my surprise, in the online college, most of the things were done online, and there was very little or even no hand-writing at all. To assert that there were little hand-writing tasks, in BE 1200, I did my first assignment online without any paperwork. Moreover, the first question in math that I did was purely online.
Lastly, I used to think that teachers in their colleges would teach relatively slower, just like the high school teachers. Besides, I had a mentality that the teachers would follow the students up to attend classes. However, I was surprised that the classes are independently attended and that whether the student is there or not, the scheduled class will go on, unless communicated otherwise. Moreover, another contrast is seen in the rate at which the college teachers teach; they teach fast.
Conclusion
In conclusion, it is right to argue that sometimes what people think about a given phenomenon or place could be different from reality. Like everything I thought about my online college, which turned out to be the opposite, so can other things that people hold towards or against something. Thus, it is important to embrace the saying that goes, "Experience is the best teacher,” since it is out of my experience with the school that I can authentically oppose my earlier mentality about the online school.
