Introduction
During my externship, I expected to learn how to apply the knowledge I learned in class in an actual working environment. I also expected to acquire additional practical skills related to technology to help me understand the theoretical concepts learned in class more. Thus, I would have the actual experience necessary to be successful in the technology industry.
Week 1
My duties and responsibilities during the externship included picking up and attending to phone calls, helping the supervisor to replace cracked or broken phone and tablet screens and digitizers, and putting screen protectors. Additionally, I assisted him in replacing batteries and hard drives, in updating the tablets and computers, and installing antivirus on customers' personal computers.
I worked mainly on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. My working hours varied because I had to balance between class and work. On the days I had afternoon classes, I would report at 8:00 hours and leave at noon, and on those I had morning classes, I would report at 14:00 hours and work until 23:00 hours. However, some weeks, when I did not have classes, I would spend the whole day working.
Company Culture
There was no specific dress code at Digital Detect, Inc. The employees did not have to worry about formals and tie. Nevertheless, the company's policy on dressing required employees to be in business casuals. Torn, frayed or dirty clothing was unacceptable. In addition, the clothes had to be well fitting. That is, oversized, body-hugging, or buggy clothes were to be avoided.
The benefits of the company were that one had the opportunity to become a full term employee once the externship period expired. In addition, the company offered discounts on products and services to employees.
Company
Digital Detect Inc.'s mission is that its repair is more than just a repair. The company seeks to offer timely repair for all apple products as customers wait.
Company Website - http://myapplerepair.com/ is very informative on all the services and products the company offers. Of particular importance is the privacy policy that informs customers on how the company collects, uses, maintains, and discloses information gathered from them.
The Site Coordinator was Prawarna Kindelpitiya.
Summary
In conclusion, I would just like to say that Digital Detect, Inc. and its entire externship staff were resourceful to me. I offer my gratitude mostly to my supervisor, Thilak Kindelpitiya, for training me in phone and tablet repair. The training and mentorship supplemented the knowledge that I learned in class.
Hence, this externship experience was very educational because I had to apply the knowledge I learned in my classes practically in the workplace. In addition, concepts that I had difficulties understanding in class became easy when I did them in the company.
Final Thoughts
Undeniably, I learned more than just phone and tablet repair from the externship. In particular, I acquired customer service and business management skills, mainly because I worked closely with customers and the business owner. I also discovered that the technology industry is not as complicated and serious as people think. I found it enjoyable since all the company staff exerted fun in all work processes, which created teamwork and a sense of belonging. In short, the externship broadened my mind on how to operate my company in the future.
