When studying AA and BS psychological degrees at the College of State Island, I was not interested in the field of psychology until I began taking more advanced courses. During this period, I engage many individuals and assisted them in solving their issues. Having often pursued study and work that allows me to understand the opinions and cultural beliefs of individuals, counseling is a field that can help me develop these passions and skills. I have always been fascinated to understand the functioning of the human mind. I have noted that the veteran population faces challenges that every person is shy to talk about. I feel that people, in general, have the answers to their problems, and the best way to help is to let them be a part of their own solutions to straighten the healing process in their own life. Another motivating factor is that being a veteran, and I can help the veteran community. For this reason, I have decided to focus my Master's Studies in the area of mental health counseling, and your competitive program at the College of Staten Island is my first option for graduate study due to your strength in this area of Counseling Psychology.
Becoming a professional counselor implies fulfilling my desire, reconstructing my profession on a new level, and quenching my intellectual curiosity simultaneously. My determination to pursue the study of mental health counseling on a professional level dates back during my childhood in which my father became addicted to alcohol and divorced with my mother. Dealing with that at a young age I got into a lot of trouble in public school to high school but the fact that my mother was able to get me the services I needed to get on the right track, like mentor groups and counseling I was able to deal with my issues growing up. Overall, if I did not have my mother to guide me to the right paths in life and get me the help I needed. I would not be the man I am today. With that in mind, these moments in life, along with others, give me the ability to relate to all types of ethnic groups on many levels, which fuels my fire to excel in the Psychology path.
I am very pleased to have had the experience of working as a volunteer at the United States Marine Corps. My responsibilities involved offering therapeutic services and providing continuous support to disabled veterans and those facing post-traumatic stress disorders. This experience offered me an insight into the broad diversity of the dynamics of the family that are intrinsic to the challenges facing mental health.
I consider myself a strong candidate because of the relevance of my education and volunteer experiences. I am a hardworking, dedicated, and persistent individual because I waited nearly two years to obtain AA and BS psychology degrees, including a minor in American Sign Language. My best Values which define me is to work hard, learn everything there is to the best of my abilities, let nothing stop you, never be afraid to fail at something, waste no time looking back just move forward. My overall goal is to get my PSYD and to give back to the Veteran population truly and to help enforce the services that helped me get to this point in my life. Thank you for considering my application to your program.
