Decision making based on values allows us to transcend in self-actualization and live an authentic life of establishing fully who we are. Values are essential in the development of democracy around the world. Living with values enable people to identify what they need to do and become responsible and accountable for their behaviors. The most important personal values for decision making include integrity, self-discipline, responsibility, and creativity.
Individuals involved in the business from small business to multinational companies face ethical dilemmas every day in the workplace. These dilemmas contradict personal moral values and pose a complicated scenario because they require an individual to decide to weigh the benefits and effects of the decisions to the business (Trevino & Nelson, 2017). I was faced with an ethical situation where I was required to make a value-based decision. While on duty at a grocery store, I witnessed a woman carrying a child steal food in front of me. She appeared homeless and disheveled. There are two types of decisions that I could choose from, which are to turn her in for the theft or withhold the incident that just happened and find a better solution to make her realize that her actions are immoral. It would be appropriate to follow work ethics as part of my responsibility to ensure all products are in place and no shoplifting occurs. As we know stealing is a criminal offense and the lady is not putting a right example for her child; thus the best method for this is to alert the security team about the criminal offense that just happened. Alternatively, I could choose to withhold on informing the security and letting the lady know that it can be a severe offense to shoplift. One option for this is to pay the product, as mentioned she seemed homeless meaning she is jobless. In this scenario, moral differences are present and to deal with this moral difference is to use moral subjectivism. Therefore, I would choose to choose to withhold the incident and use an alternative solution to help the lady as if I decide to alert the security team it can also lead to making the lady's life much worst.
Conclusion
Rosenstand (2012) observed that establishing the "right" or "just" conclusion in a moral scenario might be confusing. The issue of fairness is vital in a business environment and plays a critical role in establishing morally appropriate decisions. In an ideal society, integrity, innovation, passion is essential to the business to evolve with directness to serve change. Improvements and new ideas at all business levels to have new insights into the product, customers, and processes.
