A clear description of nursing specialty practice is essential for the broader community of health consumers and nurses to gain understanding and familiarity of the nursing specialty contribution to nursing and the general healthcare. As such, my specialty setting is that of Women’s Health-Gynecology and Obstetrics. Within this specialty, one has to understand a lot of insights on matters of female reproductive health, childbirth, and pregnancy. Specifically, one has to acquire advanced knowledge of obstetrics and gynecology. Under the specialty setting of women's health, there are many areas that I have to be aware of. These areas include reproductive infertility, female reproductive surgery, and pelvic medicine, as well as gynecologic oncology (Walsh, 2016). However, my primary specialty area focuses on reproductive surgery and female pelvic medicine.
The American Nurses Association (2017) provides professional standards of nursing practice, which act as authoritative statements of duties that all registered nurses should perform competently regardless of their specialty or population. The common professional standards, which require the knowledge of advanced physical assessment, pharmacology, and pathophysiology include diagnosis and evidence-based practice. Diagnosis involves identifying the nature of the illness that a patient might be suffering by examination of symptoms. EBP, on its part, involves the explicit and conscientious use of evidence to make the best decisions towards a patient’s treatment. For instance, in case a female suffers from vaginal or UTIs, several tests have to be carried out for diagnosis, and the best treatment will also be provided based on the EBP.
In my specialty area, I have to diagnose each of the conditions I come across. After the diagnosis, I can determine the way forward. For instance, in the case of urinary incontinence, which involves the unintentional loss of urine, I have to look for clues by examining the medical history, a physical exam, as well as a urinary stress test. The primary purpose of diagnosis, in this case, is to improve the overall care of the patient (Guide Central, 2020). After diagnosis, EBP will be used to provide treatment, and some of the treatment measures, in this case, include a change in lifestyles and conducting pelvic floor muscles. The same case applies to the urinary tract infection, but the treatment is different.
