Introduction
Attention Getter: Hello, how are you? Today I would like us to talk about the dangers of smoking. First I would like us to ask ourselves these two questions; Are we aware that every hour more than fifty American's die because of smoking? Do you know that smoking is the leading cause of death in America that can be prevented?
If you have accessed Health Literacy Website recently, I am sure you have come across a post from April 1, 2011, which provides shocking facts about smoking (Frieden). Researchers made a correlation between smoking and cancer in 1930 in Cologne Germany. Before this time nobody in the world had related smoking to cancer or any negative health effects on the body.
Reason to Listen: Smoking is an act which can be referred to as a norm. This is so because it has become very prevalent in our society. Smoking is harmful not only to the person smoking but also to the people around them.
Topic Revelation Statement: Today, I intend to persuade you guys to stop smoking to those of us here who smoke and also provide you with information which you could use to persuade your friends of family members who are smokers to stop the act.
Establishment of Ethos: It does not matter if you are a smoker or not; it is important to know the negative aspects of the act. It is important that we are aware of the harmful health and environmental effects of smoking to the smoker and the people around them. Smoking causes many diseases that can lead to death. Therefore smoking close to other people will expose to them as second hand smokers and thus are likely to face similar health effects.
Thesis Statement: smoking not only contains ingredients which are very harmful to the person smoking and inhaling the ingredients, but also the substances are also harmful to people/non-smokers around them and the environment. People argue that smoking is a means of reducing stress; however there are plenty of other ways which are not harmful to the body which one can reduce stress.
Preview Statement: Specifically, during my speech, I am going to talk about two issues associated with smoking. First, I will discuss how smoking hurts the person who is smoking. Second, I will discuss the negative effects of smoking to the second hand smokers, i.e., those around those who are smoking. I am also going to provide solutions for both of the problems.
Transition (Let's begin by learning about the health effects of smoking to the smoker, i.e., personal, physical and psychological health effects of smoking)
Body
A:
Main Point 1: How smoking is harmful to your health.
Most people smoke cigarettes as a means of enjoyment and recreation purposes. Others argue that they smoke cigarettes to reduce stress. Researchers have indicated that cigarettes contain a lot of chemicals that are harmful to the health of a human being. In an article published by quit smoking website on July 24, 2016, cigarettes have been found out to have over 400 chemicals which a person inhales after smoking a cigarette ("What's In a Cigarette, 599 Ingredients in a Cigarette."). Out of these, 43 chemicals are cancerous, i.e., cause cancer to humans. Scientists have identified that the most common chemicals contained in cigarettes include carbon monoxide, tar, nicotine, and ammonia. Nicotine is an addictive substance and is responsible for the addiction a person develops after smoking (Leach 303). Among other disease, smoking causes lung cancer, stroke, blood pressure, and coronary heart disease. Other types of cancer which are associated with smoking include cervix cancer, bladder, blood, liver, and stomach cancer just to name a few. Smoking also increases the chances of developing lung problems, asthma as well as ear infections.
Main Point 2: Smoking is not only harmful to the person smoking but also to those who are around the smoker.
Research shows that non-smokers are also at risk of developing adverse health effects. Secondary smoking also referred to as second hand smoking refers to a situation whereby a person around someone who is smoking inhales the fumes from the cigarette unwillingly. Statistics indicate that approximately 2,500,000 nonsmokers have died since 1964 as a result of health problems associated with exposure to second hand smoking (Secondhand Smoke Facts). Inhaling cigarette smokes exposes the second hand smoker to tobacco. A pregnant mother is also likely to expose her unborn baby to the adverse health effects of smoking in a case whereby they smoke. The unborn infants absorb the chemicals of tobacco and these results to health effects later after they are born (Forestell et al. 638)
Transition (Now that we have learned about the impacts of smoking on the health the body, now let's look at the solutions to the two issues)
B: How to quit smoking or prevent second hand smoking
The best way to avoid the adverse health effects associated with smoking is to quit smoking either directly or indirectly. Smoking as mentioned earlier is very addictive. It is therefore very difficult for a smoker to decide not to smoke. The first step to stop smoking is making a personal decision that one is going to commit to stopping smoking or the use of any tobacco-related products. The most advised method to adopt to quit smoking is the turkey method. This method refers to whereby a person promises themselves that they are never going to smoke (Max 2016).
To stop influencing others indirectly through one's Smoking habits will ensure that second hand smokers are reduced and not exposed. Smokers should ensure that they use designated smoking areas usually referred to as "smoking zones."
Conclusion
Some so many people die every year as a result of smoking-related health complications. This can be reduced by simply quitting smoking.
Today, I hope that I have successfully convinced you that when it comes to negative effects associated with smoking, the best solution is to quit smoking. Tobacco smoking negatively affects society because of personal and public health threats which are associated with the act.
I hope that you have gained knowledge of the health effects of smoking as well as ways to avoid or quit smoking. I hope my speech will enable you to make an informed decision on smoking.
