Introduction
A professional is an individual who is formally certified by a specific body of professionals that belong to a particular profession by completing the required course of practice and studies. Professionals' competence can be measured against the developed set of standards or code of ethics. A professional nurse tends to have a couple of characteristics that guide them on how they conduct their operations in both private and public medical facilities. For example, some of the attributes that professional nurses have are; they use a specific professional organization as a significant reference point; they believe in self-regulation, the value of the public services, and they are committed to their work (Fukada, 2018). Also, nursing is characterized as a profession due to the specialized professionalism and training undergone by nurses, and the confidence that nurses possess when dealing with patients. The confidence among the nurses is based on the body of knowledge that expands via research, the scope of practice, code of ethics, and works that tend to serve humanity. Therefore, due to a couple of characteristics that are possessed by professional nurses, this paper will discuss the most critical trait owned by nurses and their code of ethics.
The most crucial characteristic that professional nurses have is the diverse range of knowledge that allows them to deal with different healthcare issues. Medical care has significantly changed because of healthcare issues such as changes in disease structure and an increase in the aging population. It is vital for nursing professionals to know various disease structures, thus allowing them to offer appropriate medical services. For example, whenever a patient has severe health problems, the nurses and other medical professionals are required to provide relevant short term and intensive health care (Fukada, 2018). Also, if the patients' treatment is complete, home care is expected in the provision of support and treatment to the patient with respect and dignity until the end of their life. Therefore, professional nurses tend to combine different sources of medical knowledge and incorporate it into their nursing practice and decision making.
Consequently, nurses require diverse knowledge since they contribute to the community as professionals. Societal members expect nurses to provide direct care to patients and protect people's lives as they support their activities. Nurses tend to improve their professional competency and use their daily practices in the dissemination of medical services. Professional competence among nurses is obtained through learning and experiences from their daily activities (Fukada, 2018). Nurses use professional expertise that can work well under different circumstances and motivate others as they view the usefulness of professional abilities. Also, through the scope of work, professional nurses utilize their professional skills, judgment, skills, attitude, and value in the dissemination of health care (Fukada, 2018). Therefore, the expert knowledge and practices allow the nurses to achieve their set medical and life goals since they are motivated as they disseminate the medical services.
Additionally, through diverse knowledge with professional nurses, they can evaluate and promote their nursing competencies when conducting nursing practices. Nurses utilize their expertise in setting various practices and situations which enhance their activities. For example, nurses might decide on promoting home care among patients and other societal members, thus improving people's health (Fukada, 2018). The medical institutions have the responsibility of setting a broad range of settings and facilities that help in the maintenance of a stable workforce. Therefore, knowledge and skills possessed by the nursing practitioners help in the assessment of different competency levels that are used for self-improvement and staff development.
Code of Ethics
According to the Canadian Nurses Association (2017), nursing ethics or morals are concerned with how community issues create an impact on people's health and their well-being. The nurse's primary aim is to develop and maintain awareness of the aspects of social justice that might affect various social determinants of one's the well-being and health. Nurses are guided by multiple ethical responsibilities and nursing values that are grounded with the individuals receiving medical care, nursing colleagues, students, and medical care providers. Nursing professionals tend to provide safe, competent, compassionate medical care, and they promote and respect the informed process of decision making (Zahedi et al., 2013). Also, the code of ethics among nursing professionals describes the nurse's activities to address different social inequalities. Therefore, considering the code ethics among nursing professionals promotes the social justices which tend to be associated with the well-being and health of people.
Conclusion
Nursing professionals have a diverse range of characteristics that promote health service delivery to patients. The most crucial aspect is the knowledge and skills possessed by nursing professionals in the delivery of medical services. For example, nursing knowledge and expertise allows nurses to deal with different healthcare issues, thus achieving their set goals and objectives. Also, the societal members expect nurses to provide direct care to patients and protect people's lives as they support their activities hence making it crucial to have the skills and knowledge for the nursing practice. Besides, the code of ethics among professional nurses allows nurses to promote social justice among the well-being and health of individuals. Therefore, nursing professionals play a vital role in the society and medical facilities, thus requiring support from both the community and the government.
