Introduction
Human development encompasses a diverse process that ensures an individual’s advancement from a helpless infant to a responsible adult. Each phase of human development is vital, whether in the genetic formulation, prenatal advancement, bio-sociological to cognitive development. Moreover, while humans often do not have control over some aspects of child development, such as genetic, essential phases such as parental strategies fall within human radar to ensure children’s positive upbringing. The most exciting and astonishing section of chapter nine is the parental style and child outcome. the section covers different parenting types, which an individual can employ when giving direction, instruction, and child upbringing.
Different Outcomes
The chapter contends that the different styles have different outcomes on children’s socio-cultural behavior. They include authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and uninvolved parenting. Each parenting style has a varying level of parental control and parental involvement. As parents engage with children, authoritative parents tend to have total or high control and involvement. Authoritative parenting, the child follows the commands of the parent without questioning. Further, while authoritarian parenting presents high parental control and low participation, permissive parenting accounts for high involvement but low control. Nonetheless, uninvolved parenting discourages parental control or involvement in a child’s life.
Style of Parenting
Irrespective of the style of parenting a parent adopts, they all impact a child’s behavior formulation, especially in discouraging anti-social conduct like drug abuse, disobedience, crime, or deliquescent engagements. For instance, authoritative parenting effectively prevents anti-social behaviors and conducts, while uninvolved parenting increases children’s probability of engaging in anti-social behaviors. The section is interesting as it highlights the importance of parental involvement and control in molding responsible children.
It shows that parents that are not involved in the upbringing, guiding, and directing children endangers their future as it poor parenting eventually results in anti-social behaviors. For example, from the section, the anti-social behavior score is relatively high among children subjected to uninvolved parenting, unlike those individuals under the jurisdiction of authoritative or authoritarian parenting. The section reveals that as children grow from grade two towards the 12th grade, they tend to engage in anti-social conduct, but with a good parenting style that allows parents to be more involved in children’s life aids in reducing the chances of children engaging the negative anti-social behaviors.
Conclusion
In my life, parenting has been a critical and essential element in ensuring development into a focused and responsible individual. My parents subjected me to strict authoritarian parenting as throughout my childhood development, they were always involved in all the activities and monitored my actions. Whether at school or at home, my parents set high expectations for my siblings and me when we were growing up. They instigated strict nurturing programs and punished mistakes harshly without sparing any individuals. I grew up in a home that parents believed in the importance of the following rules and regulations as vital social skills not only to make us obedient parents but also to promote us into good citizens. Although the environment was harsh and did not entertain anti-social behaviors, it molded me to be an individual with good behavior, goal-driven, and ambitious in all my endeavors. Conclusively, I believe authoritarian parenting is vital in ensuring children have good behaviors, safe, goal-oriented, and respect the authorities. Therefore, the section of parenting styles and child outcomes remains an exciting part of chapter nine.
