Introduction
Nursing can be defined as an occupation in the health care sector which involves the provision of care to communities, families as well as individuals enabling them to recover, attain as well as maintain quality life and optimal health (Egenes, 2017). This paper illustrates my nursing development in the fundamental of nursing in this rotation, and a brief overview of how the skills learned will help me in my nursing career. In summary of the fundamental of nursing teachings, I am going to base my nursing skills on three basic instructions or elements which include the history of nursing, therapeutic communication as well as the nursing process. I believe that these three nursing elements are crucial for me and I will apply them in my career to help develop my skills into highly competitive towards high-quality care for patients.
Since the prehistoric times intuitive nursing was practiced among primitive tribes all through and lasted all along to the early Christian era even though nursing was instinctive and ignorant, people performed it due to the compassion for and wish of helping others. During this period, it was women who played the role or function of nursing. Educated nursing began on 15th June 1860 at St. Thomas Hospital in London after the opening of Florence Nightingale School of Nursing. Increased opportunities for women to access education, trends that resulted from the war, women emancipation as well as the social consciousness arousal are some of the factors that influenced nursing development during this period. Florence Nightingale who is recognized as the mother of the modern nursing participated much in this development. This motivates me always to be ready to offer my best at whatever circumstance in my career.
Therapeutic communication forms an essential element of sympathy and cares towards patients. It helps in elaborating how the knowledge of age and culture helps in the interaction between a patient and a nurse and from it I was able to understand that it is the role of the nurse to provide the right information and comfort to patients that he/she attends to (Williams, & Hopper, 2015). By use of empathy or compassion, a nurse can use both facial expressions as well as verbal communications to establish a healthy healing relationship between the patient and the nurse. Proper knowledge and application of the three phases of communication will help ensure high-quality healthcare provision by nurses.
The nursing process involves five steps that are utilized in the problem-solving process. By understanding this process, I am going to be gaining both the subjective as well as objective information that is important in the establishment of a healthcare problem. The five steps include planning, assessment, evaluation, diagnosis as well as implementation and by effectively applying these steps in my nursing career I will be able to come up with the best strategy which will guide me in offering high-quality care to my patients during my career. The process was established under a close review of the past nursing experiences, and I will employ it in my job to give the best services and even come up with new ways of enhancing the process.
