Introduction
According to Allen & Cowdery (2014), an exceptional child is a child who appears to be different from his/her peers due to factors like disabilities, cultural beliefs, and practices of children and their families. The book exceptional child by Allen and Cowdery centers on the inclusion of children with special needs as a means of ensuring that they develop adequately. That means that the children need to attend preschool and recreational programs with their peers.
To ensure support to both the child with delayed development and the parents, I would apply several techniques that I have learned. For instance, emphasizing ethical issues while in school. Encouraging observation of ethics to the child with delayed development will foster the feeling of inclusion to the child. I believe that this knowledge will be necessary for the child's success in school since the child gains acceptance and learns to tolerate and be tolerated by the peers.
Furthermore, as a teacher, I would design a learning environment that emphasizes on the socialization of the child with the peers. (Allen & Cowdery 2014).This promotes the interaction of the child with various children within the environmental setup. In the process, the child can learn and acquire a set of skills from the peers. I think socialization is a crucial component to the success of a child with delayed development in school, given the fact that it embodies inclusion and creates a sense of belonging to the child.
Moreover, I would use a goal and activity-oriented type of curriculum that is not only based on classwork but also on some brain molding activities such as dramatic play and art classes. A child with developmental delay will find this useful as it will reveal the areas needed to be worked on by both the parents and teachers involved. The knowledge of a goal and activity-oriented curriculum changed my view on the success of a child at school. Initially, I thought it was a waste of time for the child. However, the merits are undoubtedly overwhelming. A school can put this into practice by creating some time for activity learning. (Allen & Cowdery 2014).
Integration of professional efforts through professional collaboration is vital in creating a set up where the teachers, parents, children, and even clinicians can come together and develop different means of attending to children with delayed development. As a teacher, I directly link this to the success of the child at school as it enables us to listen to him/her more and effectively determining how to attend to his/her needs. Failure by the school to encourage the practice of professional collaboration has led to the children lacking a platform of speaking out their minds, consequently creating depression among them.
I would also assist the child and the parent by implementing a child to child interaction forum; this enhances the interaction among the children who have various needs, cultural practices, and beliefs. Besides, a child to child interaction forum enables the children to understand each other and creat friendship bonds best. Based on my observations, I am convinced that this would translate to the success of the child at school by creating unity among the children hence the ability to learn and achieve more. (Allen & Cowdery 2014)
Failure to thoroughly asses and accommodate students often results in adverse consequences, particularly on the development behavior of the child. Assessment is essential in tracking the performance and progress of the student, while accommodation enables equal exposure to the basic instructions given to the students. Inadequate assessment and accommodation to students generally lead to poor performance. However, adapting solutions like designing a teaching strategy that accommodates students with disabilities will immensely aid in improving their performance. I would suggest providing oral instruction to children with disabilities, making activities more short and simple, and doing frequent progress checks on students with disabilities as some of the ways of meeting accommodation of the students.
The introduction of assistive technology in the classroom would also ensure that children with disabilities realize their full potential. I would like to use talking calculators to enable my students with hearing disabilities to have a scope of what is going on in the classroom. Also, electronic worksheets would be beneficial to the students with conditions such as dyslexia in helping them complete their classwork and assignments. (Allen & Cowdery 2014)
Lastly, encouraging Scientific Research-Based Interventions (SRBI) would make instructions more clear to students with disabilities. I would like to use this approach, particularly when developing the mathematical and behavioral skills of the students. By integrating research-based core instruction, targeted intervention, and intensive intervention, the SRBI approach would best shape the academic and behavioral skills of the child with special needs.
Conclusion
In conclusion, child development is a crucial issue that needs to be addressed through the application of various methods targeted at drawing the attention of the child, understanding their culture and beliefs. Nonetheless, embracing them and making them learn new minds developing concepts. I would like to state that I find all that I have learned helpful, and putting them in to use would assist the students to archive their goals.
