Introduction
Health Information Management (HIM) involves obtaining, examining, and protecting both digital and traditional medical records to ease patient visits within a hospital facility. Fenton, Low, Abrams, and Butler-Henderson (72) affirmed that Health Information Technology (HIT) plays a crucial role in guaranteeing the appropriate secondary use of patient data. Usually, HIM professionals get training on the proper use and comprehension of current information technology to enhance the quality of care for patients across the continuum. Through the HIM training, professionals get to understand the workflow in any health facility. The professionals are responsible for making sure that the patients' medical records are correct, complete, and safe. Quality is a significant aspect of HIM as the efforts of the professionals can either improve or diminish the quality of patient care within a health facility. The responsibilities of the HIM professional include fostering quality, integrity, and safeguarding patients' health information by taking physical examinations and keying in the clinical information in the computer system. HIT is changing at a faster rate and is expected to accelerate over the coming years (Fenton et al. 72). As technology continues to advance, so does the roles of HIM and technology professionals.
Trends in Healthcare
Over the years, technology has evolved. In the health sector, technology has changed healthcare functions. Some inventions have changed the healthcare sector positively. One of these inventions is Artificial Intelligence (AI). Nevertheless, AI has its advantages and disadvantages. Regarding the benefits, AI provides fast and accurate diagnosis, minimizes the tie of treatment, and reduces human errors (Sharma, Zinnia, Vepanattu, & Chauhan 3). On the contrary, artificial intelligence is capable of increasing the rate of unemployment in the healthcare sector. Combi and Pozzi (83) stated that trends in AI techniques in HIM reveal that clinical information systems, hospital information systems, and electronic health records are analyzed by AI. AI has supported integrated management of patient and clinical information.
My Interest in Becoming a Health Information Management Professional
Since my graduation from high school, I became passionate about the healthcare field. Combined with my keen interests and perfection in technology, a career in becoming a health information management professional suits me. Additionally, my excellence in scrutinizing, evaluating, and analyzing information will be useful in my career. Most importantly, I am interested in becoming a HIM professional because it is rewarding. It is agreeable that the best feeling an individual can achieve is to know that others can benefit from their expertise. The career will challenge me every day and with those challenges, I will become a better HIM professional. With more experience and training, I know that I will become better at my job.
Plans of Being Successful in the Program
For me to thrive in the Health Information Technology program, time management would be a significant aspect that I would improve on. Another thing I would do succeed in this program to visit the writing center to get help with tips for completing successful essays in the healthcare field. Moreover, I would make use of my study skills including taking notes during lectures and reading the textbook to improve my success in the program. Most importantly, I would avoid procrastination of my assignments to better understand the course programs.
