Introduction
The focus of my approach would be derived from reeducating my clients to reshape society. From the basis of the Adlerian, Theory humans are motivated by social relatedness rather than sexual urges. The key concept of the theory is that Behavior is purposeful and goal-directed. My approach would be explaining to the clients the internal determinants of behavior. Another approach I would use when practicing is the Existential Approach. Focusing on the capacity for self-awareness, creating one's identity, establishing meaningful relationships with others, as well as the search for meaning and purpose in life are the major concerns of the approach (Corey, 2017). Combining the two approaches will help the client to not only become more knowledgeable about them but be able to deal with the changes in the society through learning about their relationships with other people and the concepts revolving about those relationships.
View of Role as a Counselor
There are many roles counselors hold in the professional setting According to the Adrelian theory and existential approaches. As I have continued to learn throughout school my views on what roles counselors hold has changed. First, I believe a major role, although generic, is to be a helper according to the orientation stage of the Aurelian theory which means being there for them in whatever way that will help them, especially while making strategies and plans for their change process. Another role I believe a counselor should have the ability to discover the clients' big mistakes through the assessment stage of the Aurelian theory by learning of their past encounters and choices. A counselor should be able to determine the unrealistic ambitions and lack of confidence of the client after accessing the clients functioning. In addition, the counselor should be able to identify clients who avoid responsibility and encourage them to take responsibility for their actions and decisions according to the existential therapy where the clients should understand that they have the ability to change the course of their lives by correcting past mistakes and including new strategies.
Clients Role in Counseling
The client's role in counseling ultimately depends on the situation and the reason the client is there in the first place. The umbrella I see the client's role falling under is being in a cooperative working relationship with the counselor who is supposed to guide them through the life-changing processes following the two theories. The cooperation entails clients being willing to provide information that will help me as the counselor get them rehabilitated as quickly as possible. The more information about their goals or current environment they are living in they give to me in our sessions the more proficient the services will be for them. The client should also have trust in the counselor. The therapeutic relationship should be formed to the point that the client and counselor work together to make decisions along the therapeutic process in order to get the best results.
Therapeutic Goals
The therapeutic goal in the process is completely determined based on the client's needs and desires. After following through with the behavioral assessment of the client it's my job to determine what the client may need in order to move forward. Based on the results of the assessment, as the counselor, I will formulate a list of goals together with the client in order to address the client's situation. Working with the client to get them to buy into the direction established is very important. Getting them to buy into the goals to hold themselves accountable for their past mistakes should be the end goal following the existential approach. There are many cases where adjustments need to be made to the goals as the process moves along if the client is not completely bought in or if the goals just aren't working. Evaluating your therapeutic goals and giving insights to the client is the third step of the Adlerian theory which will bring the two parties on board while seeking to find the best responses to the client's situation.
Relationship Issues
When it comes down to the therapeutic relationship there are many boundaries that need to be drawn and held throughout the process. Ethically as a counselor, we are held to a certain standard by the code of ethics that looks over the provider-patient relationship. Between not exchanging information with a third party, maintaining a cooperative relationship, limiting all relationships to just the therapeutic session, most importantly seeking advice about things when you are unsure and need assistance are all part of relationship issues that may appear in the process. The relationship constraints remain to be the same for the two theories.
Primary Techniques
Establishing the proper therapeutic relationship, the is a two-way street that way the client is on the same page as the counselor to get the best results possible, especially while incorporating the Adrelian theory. I then would also need to assess the client to see what their current state is in the second stage of the Aurelian theory by learning of their past experiences and mistakes. Although they may tell me one thing it may be something completely different then what they say. Along the way encouraging the client to develop a better self-understanding, in order to gain a better understanding of their purpose goes hand in hand with the existential approach where the client is made to understand that the most part is to be played by them. A priority of mine would be to educate the client to make new choices to better their life following the last stage of the Aurelian theory (the re-orientation stage).
Addressing Cultural Diversity
There will always be issues of cultural problems such as social interests that we will face in the counseling profession. Following the Adrelian theory, issues of social interest such as offering help to others or avoiding mistreatment of other people in the society will be discussed in order to establish healthy and unhealthy integrative approaches. The way I will address cultural diversity is by being open. Open to learning new ways of values and beliefs that differ from my own. Taking the opportunity to learn from the clients when these opportunities present themselves will help me in my future endeavors. The problem with cultural diversity when it appears can sometimes be negatively projected directly to you from the client. If it's too much of an issue I would reach out to my supervisor for the proper advice to come to a resolution and be able to work with the client in a positive manner. Maybe challenging to me as a beginning counselor due to my limitations and lack of experience I have in the field. Not being afraid to attack the differences between the client and myself such as language barriers or lacking the client's cooperation will be a risk that I am willing to take in the proper manner. It would be important for me to have the client define themselves within their social environments' and see how that may influence their lifestyle and health through their daily life.
Ethical and Legal Issues
The Code of Ethics that govern client-provider relationships in the field of psychology lays out a fine script for us as counselors to follow. As being a counselor I will come in contact with a lot of confidential information that you are held accountable for. As mentioned before, I will not be allowed to share with a third party, unless you fear the client is dangerous to themselves or others. Confidentiality is an extremely important element to have in my daily practice. Informed consent providing adequate info about the ongoing process. (A.2 Code of Ethics). Another thing would be avoiding harm and imposing values on to the clients to avoid causing harm to the client by insulting. (A.4 Code of Ethics).
