INSPIRATION
Inspiration is a feeling of enthusiasm and being mentally stimulated by someone or something to do something new or to be creative. If an individual refers to something or someone as being an inspiration, it means it makes him/her or other people develop the urge to achieve something. Most of us find inspiration from a variety of things or people we interact with daily, and that’s what makes us strive to be better versions of ourselves and gives us the motivation to work harder in our everyday hustles of life. For someone to draw inspiration from an individual, their character, competence, and their show of care and empathy are what when cumulatively summed up will determine the level of trust; one accords that individual. In this essay, I seek to extensively discuss how these traits, competence, care, and character get assessed to determine the level of trust and credibility a person will be accorded and hence the amount of inspiration others draw from this person.
I draw a lot of inspiration from different people ranging from religious leaders, my professors, and my coworkers, but for this paper, I’ll focus on my immediate supervisor at work. He is a man from whom I draw a lot of inspiration, especially in the arena of exhibiting a lot of competence and professionalism in his line of duty.
COMPETENCE
Competence is the state or quality of being able and suitable to perform a given task effectively and efficiently. Competence is achieved through the combination of practical and theoretical knowledge, skills, and values in specific areas of study or specialization such as medicine, engineering, or management. My supervisor is an operations manager in our department, and thus for me to determine his competency, I took into consideration his management skills, interpersonal relation, and emotional intelligence. He is a man who does his work with a lot of professionalism, and he’s a stickler of the rules. For the time I have worked under him, he has never compromised the quality of his work, and he also demonstrates his grasp of the bureaucracy followed in the performance of duties.
CHARACTER
Character refers to the moral qualities specifically associated with a person. Even though morality is a very subjective matter, there are some specific traits such as honesty and trustworthiness, which extensively demonstrates someone’s character. For my supervisor, this a man whom, from my interaction with him, I believe he is of high integrity and transparency. He demands accountability even for the smallest amount of resources assigned to an employee. There was an instance where I requested to be sold an old obsolete office chair, which he ended up recording in the books of accounts contrary to my expectation that he would easily ignore it since the amount involved was so negligible.
CARE
To care is to show a certain level of genuine concern and empathy towards someone or something. Care can be demonstrated through a lot of ways, some of which are subtle, while others are outright. At one time, my supervisor woke up at night to attend to one of my colleagues who had been arrested in a case of mistaken identity; this act demonstrated that he is a caring man. The downside of assessing someone’s level of care and empathy when determining the amount of credibility and trust is that care is subjective since what one person considers show of care isn’t the same for someone else.
CONCLUSION
A mix of the three determinants and how an individual score in each one gives a basis on which one can be able to assign a level of trust and credibility. I attach a lot of weight and emphasis on character and competence because I believe that if somebody scores highly in these two fronts, he will be more credible and trustworthy. I consider the show of care and empathy as the least important trait when assessing the level of credibility and trust sing to someone. For my supervisor, I regard him as a very credible man, and I bestow upon him a very high level of trust, and that’s why I draw a lot of inspiration from him.
