Variable Types and Values
In the data provided, the heart rate is a dependent variable. This is because its manipulation is being carried out hence it will respond to rest and exercise. We consider rest and exercise as the independent variables in this instance because they will be used to determine the heart rate. The males and females under study will be the dichotomous variables gender is used in categorization.
We will consider the males and females to be qualitative data type if they are being described as male or female with a variable number and not counted. If the number of females and males is definite, and counting is done using numbers instead of a body, then they could also be said to be quantitative. There will be a separation of the datasets into pre-workout and post-workout, and these would be considered to be quantitative variables because there is a calculation of the heart rate.
Taking into consideration the information provided, I analyzed the data and determined the variables and identified the types of values. Three variable groups will be used for this survey. They include:
- The heart rate during rest
- The subject's gender
- Post-exercise heart rate
The Subject's Gender (Male or Female)
Gender is a qualitative data type. This is because it is not measured in terms of numbers. Rather, it represents a concept that is derived from the subject. The excel document shows numbers that only show whether the subject is male or female instead of a number getting recorded. The value '0' represents the males while the value '1' represents the females. The number of females is 92 while that of males is 108. A combination of these variables represents the total number of people taking part in the collection of information. There is a total of 200 people in the survey. A class of people has been identified using the gender variable, one being male and the other female.
The Heart Rate During Rest
This is a quantitative data type. This is because the subjects were tested for a regular number. Its measurement was direct rather than getting the description as part of the subjects. This dataset has range, unlike the other variable. There is no defined answer because there is a variation in the results of the subjects. The approximate number for the resting heart rate is 81.0 inclusive of males and females. The range of numbers was 59 - 97.3.
The Post-Exercise Heart Rate
There is an increase in heart-rate after an individual is involved in the exercise. Just like the pre-exercise heart rate, this variable also represents quantitative data. The average value for both genders is 90.7. Again, this is a range of values that change depending on the person getting tested and the collection of this data was in measurement form. Each of these heart rate variables gives a particular number that enables the representation of each person's heart rate and is getting utilized in this dataset. The goal was to attempt determining these numbers. The determined range of the dataset was 68.2-106.7.
Conclusion
Overall, it is clear that the majority of the data was quantitative and we can identify three different variables while 2 of them represent qualitative data, pre-exercise and post-exercise heart rate for both females and males.
