Introduction
The leadership approach that nursing managers adopt is a critical element towards realizing progress in healthcare provision founded on caring human values. Like other professions, ethics are fundamental to ensure nursing integrity in the life and death decisions (Esmaelzadeh, Abbaszadeh, Borhani, & Peyrovi, 2017). Related to this is the obligation to exercise ethical leadership directed by respecting the value and dignity of colleagues, patients, and public rights. The fulfilment of this obligation compels exercising ethical values for the leaders to ensure positive and effective results for nurses, public, and patients.
The accomplishment of ethical care provision requires nursing leaders to show commitment to the patient. It involves ethical sensitivity to maximally enable all aspects of the patient including physical, social and emotional wellbeing. Ethical leadership compels one to provide nursing care indifferently and encourage others to try their best in resolving the patient physical, mental and financial problems. It extends to leading others to treat patients equally despite their medical conditions and personal attributes (Barkhordari-Sharifabad, Ashktorab, & Atashzadeh-Shoorideh, 2017). Additionally, it mandates leading by example for others to respect the self-determination right in the provision of medical care. The leader should demonstrate advocacy for patient safety, privacy, and confidentiality (Keselman, 2012). Furthermore, the leader should encourage initiative through genuine efforts that foster team spirit for the benefit of patients', employees and organisation wellbeing.
Sensitivity to self-integrity and honesty are critical to replicate personal moral standards towards maintaining professional competence. By doing so, the leader should strive towards continuously monitoring proper performance through constant assessment of employees to produce results (Esmaelzadeh, Abbaszadeh, Borhani, & Peyrovi, 2017). Here, one should have zero tolerance for errors and ethical violations. It mandates adopting error prevention approach by warning offenders and striving to modify erroneous performances. Leaders, such as participating head nurses, should develop attention to proper communication with health care team members and clients. It involves value awareness through regular contact to ensure a consistent understanding through value-driven decision making (Poikkeus, Suhonen, Katajisto, & Leino-Kilpi, 2018). The leader should exercise personable traits during problem-solving by maintaining friendly interaction. That involves eliminating irrational feelings and instead adhere to justice, honesty and fairness.
