Today’s education system is overrated. It is built on historical happenings as well as cultural precepts, some of which do not do good to those who are considered educated. Instead of advocating and cementing autonomy, mental liberation, and creativity, today’s education system tends to crush all these and instill the old concepts to people without the regard that time has greatly changed. As Mark Twain observed, the education system behaves like one that is cast on unchangeable pedestals, and this does not serve the students right. Besides, the school boards must realize that times have changed, and they do not have to live in the past by pressing on issues that do not benefit the student at all. School texts need to emphasize on the role of the student of being an independent thinker as the book, Bread Givers does, the more the reason it should be included for all high school juniors in the LA area.
The book, Bread Givers, written by Anzia Yezierska, depicts the relationship between children and their parents and how the father seeks to control the children’s lives even when they have attained an age that they can think for themselves and make informed decisions. The father misleads the children by rejecting their worthy decisions and insisting on decisions that are not better for the children (Yerierska 176). For example, when the father, Reb Smolinsky, refuses Bessie to be married to Berel Bernstein, he is doing so out of greed and selfishness (Yerierska 182). He is more concerned with the assistance that he will lose from Bessie’s marriage than the happiness she will receive by marrying the love of her life. Sometimes, the curriculum tends to behave in such a manner where the student is not allowed to think independently. Like Reb Smolinsky, who can be compared to a teacher, he expects total submission from his children even when he is wrong. The school needs to provide an avenue where children are able to think for themselves, challenge existing knowledge, and become better human beings. The book, Bread Givers, should be allowed in schools as it supports this position.
Bread Givers ought to be included in the school curriculum as it explores issues related to determination, resilience, and zealousness. These are positive traits that should be taught to the children of this generation irrespective of their gender or family background. School children need to be taught that to survive in the current world, they must be determined and remain resilient amidst adversity. This is the behavior portrayed by Sara, who goes against her father’s will by refusing to get married to the suitor her father had chosen and is determined to complete her college education (Yerierska 187). She also enrolls in college and graduates despite great resistance from her father. This zeal is what the LA child needs to be taught. That sometimes, even the elders can be wrong. Apparently, even in the school system, teachers are not infallible. They may also lead children into making wrong decisions, and the children must be given the space to reject anything that they feel may not be of benefit to them even if it is from a teacher. Were it not for Sara’s resilience, she would not have lived to be a successful lady.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the education system needs to be one that gives space for the child to think more independently. The curriculum needs to be set in such a manner that imagination and positive input from the child are given preference. Bread Givers is a book that is very favorable for LA students as it offers the learners a chance to be heard as they develop knowledge and understanding. The book instills positive traits to the children, such as determination, resilience, and zealousness. Therefore, this book needs to be added to the secondary curriculum in LA.
