Introduction
As I testify for my improvement on education, ability to engage in house duties, achieve activities as they are scheduled in plans, working with my budgets, and to keep promises or my statements after conversations, it is almost impossible to forget about the problem of partial attention, that I had in my mid-teens as a result of excessive of electronic communication devices such as mobile phone and computer. Although it is worthless to name all individual problems that it caused me, this report would be meaningless, if I fail to stress on my progressive academic performance deterioration, as I prepared to join a tertiary level of education in a few years. However, I formed groups with friends at school, and tasks were distributed daily to each group member; thus, I was able to change my use for laptop in doing research activities. The challenges made me learn of the benefits of having friends who have a positive agenda and urge to be successful. I intended to be because one cannot concentrate on social media and academics concurrently. Rober Frost, in his poem titled The Road Not Taken, begins the first stanza by saying, "Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and sorry I could not travel both” (Frost & Bingham, 1993).
Since my childhood, my mother had had an exceptional pride and confidence in me, not only because I was the only child in the family, but also, based on my respect for adult and academic excellence in school. Sincerely, when given other a thousand choices to pick a mother, I would still choose the same woman, not just because of the nine-month suffering of pregnancy, but because of her quality nurturing and care abilities, that I considered far much superior to most of my friend's mothers whom I have interacted with.
Perhaps, I have not experienced that pregnancy pain, nor the pain during the delivery process, and so to me, the vibrant piece of information in this section is a mere result of my regular interaction with books, short stories, and online studies. Back to the topic of discussion, my mother loves me and provided every sort of need that intended to use for either my gain in schools but also for leisure purposes. Maybe, she owed the predictions that by aiding my academic requirements, I would have a bright future and probably give back to other people, including her. She also could be thinking in the line of, if she fails to provide me with personal needs, then in the modern world, which is characterized by dramatic levels of criminal cases, I would solemnly form that population. Indeed, I was proud to be part of this great personality.
Description of The Challenge
It was until the age of 15 when my mother found it right to buy me a Samsung X model mobile phone for making personal communication with friends and relatives. In the same year, I had the opportunity to own an Apple Laptop, and verbally, I had considered myself as prosperous in the entire education life, following the desire and firm belief that people with computers and laptops had more chances to excel academically. Sooner than usual, I developed a close relationship with my two gadgets, that made me stay in the house for more than three days without walking out to meet friends, have fun, and so forth. In the same term, I notice a drop of five points, but we squared this out with my mother, because, logically, that could be a slight error or misunderstanding or a single unit. The decision was clear that I was double this value in my next annual evaluation results so that I meet my anticipated levels. This would further allow me to join the last class before moving to campus for an English language-related program.
To cut it short, I had a negative deviation of 7in the next year's results. At this moment, I had known my problem, but in vain, I could not address it to my level. For a whole twelve hours in the night, I was in my phone making chats via the popular social media platforms, namely; Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Twitter, Snapchat, just to mention but a few. During the day, I spent almost eight hours with my laptop, because I knew I could easily confuse my mom, that I was reading, suppose she popped in the room all over sudden. I struggled with the problem of screen time, and the impacts were more than harmful, it you let aside academic effects. For instance, I skipped most of my meals during the day, and this affected my health status, based on the health status results from a local monthly checkup. Not once, nor twice, but on multiple occasions, I crossed paths with my mum whenever she sent me in the shop for small shopping. On my way to shop, I would ensure that I confirm from all the medial social platforms that, I have no pending message to respond to, neither do I miss to view an update immediately when it is posted.
This led to a delay on the way, and to worsen the situation; I would unknowingly interchange the items. I vividly remember an occasion when I returned home with a bar of soap, which instead of a tissue paper, just because they all costed an average of $1. Having said, it is imperative that I would never get time to read and master the class concepts. My mom was getting updated, and she could not hold her anger and cruel look whenever she saw me on a laptop. In Learning to Read and Write by Fredrick Douglas, the author refers to her mother that, “Nothing seemed to make her angrier than to see me with a newspaper.” In convention, “Nothing seemed to make her angrier than to see me with a laptop” (Douglass, 2007).
Overcoming the Challenge of Screen Time
To manage this challenge, I tried formulating time schedules, but still, I intentionally went against it more regularly. I also installed the screen time limit that enables one to be on a specific site for a limited number of hours or minutes. Still, unfortunately, I always uninstalled them on the same installation. I found the best solution when I joined certain discussion groups with my colleagues so that I could participate much in studies during the day.
Most interestingly, I saw with policies that every group member was assigned a task daily, and the results would be submitted to the group leader in the morning, failure of which one would be eliminated from the group with an immediate effect. So hard it was, to cope with this new challenge, but I could not attempt to risk my performance by getting withdrawn from the group, just because I could not perform research, while I boasted of a laptop and a mobile phone, and a stable WI-FI connection. Despite the challenge of adoption, the friends welcomed me, and for the next results, I had a plus-six from my previous year's results.
Lessons Learned
The primary lessons that I garnered from this experience were the purpose of collaborating with individuals who pursue higher or same level goals. I was quick to acknowledge that, despite our abilities to make achievements and realize our goals, as I am currently in an English related program, we must put efforts to leverage those potentials from a verbal or theoretical result to practical and observable achievements. Besides, with all these, I estimated that several youths have capabilities of doing different things correctly. Still, the majority have no realized the essence and ways to make them come true. As a general knowledge, I would conclude that screen time is a great distraction, and if not well-managed, can result in severe psychological problems like the stress of failure, and poor health, due to the impact of skipping meals.
