It is the dream of most individuals to be associated with careers that would help them grow professionally while acquiring skills and competence in the given field. Hence, this was my major motivation for becoming a merchant mariner because it enhances professionalism since it allows a person to work better as member of team. Merchant mariners are obliged o have excellent skills of communication, great resourcefulness and upholding paramount discipline. These values are sharpened more when an individual spends more time operating as a team member while at the sea. Hence, being a merchant mariner will help me evolve professionally, especially with a great deal of responsibility expected of me towards the vessels and crews together with the rigorous training.

Also, I would like to be a merchant mariner because I have not always seen myself as an office person and hence have always had great admiration for careers that would allow me to explore the world. Being a merchant mariner resembles experiencing adventure daily, unlike other routine jobs, which requires individuals to stay nine hours in their offices. The career is best suited to me because it is not for people who like nine-to-five jobs. The career will enable me to explore and view magnificent oceanic views, the wonderful sunrises, and sunsets, which makes the job enjoyable because it will seem like working and having a vacation at the same time. Although I am aware that it is not all sunshine and peaches at sea, because it also implies it requires a person to be alert all times, ready to confront the perils of the sea in addition to the ship and her crew.

Furthermore, a merchant marine career provides extensive exposure to unforeseen situations, emergencies, or events. By confronting these unforeseen occurences, I will be able to acquire expansive knowledge regarding facing and dealing with such issues in case they re-occur. The exposure that I would get in this field will enable me to grow in all aspects since the element of professionalism begins with the ability to make quick decisions and effective problem-solving skills. Apart from exposure to different situations, being a merchant mariner will also expose me to various cultures. As a merchant mariner, I will be able to meet and interact with individuals from various cultural backgrounds and nationalities. Hence, I will be able to comprehend and work better as a member of a team and learn different nuances of various cultures. Therefore, it will automatically increase my adaptability and bring about extensive awareness of what goes on in different countries and learn to embrace cultural diversity.
