They say that learning is a continues process. As for Jerry, this new adventure seemed to be scarier than he had anticipated. To him, it felt like one of the hardest things he had to learn in his life. Throughout his childhood life, he had longed to do this; citing that it was not only an important skill in life but also a good exercise to become physically stronger. So, on this day, he had resolved to know it against all odds and in spite of his fears for heights." Perhaps climbing is going to boost more confidence in me", he told Daniel who was going to couch him through the exercise.
The nervousness in his face could easily be noticed even as he changed into his climbing attires. He stood there motionless as his eyes were glued at the view of the high mountain that he was to climb. "Calm down, it going to be very exciting once we start climbing", said Daniel his couch reassuringly. Daniel gave him a few instructions on how to go about that process and in a few minutes, they were off climbing gradually.
Being a first-time encounter, Jerry was naturally afraid. His couch Daniel could see the fear on his face as his legs wobbled and sweat trickled down his body. One could easily tell that awful thoughts were running through Jerry's mind as he kept looking down, up, up-down, sideways, his body randomly and he did this countlessly. It was at this point that Daniel had to confirm with him if he was okay..."Is everything okay here buddy? "Daniel asked. Jerry answered amidst fear and stammer, "No couch, take me down please, I don't want to die yet...I can't imagine what my funeral is going to be like...Please couch it is too early for me to die, tell my parents that I love them.."He kept saying these repeatedly as Daniel reassured him that he would be just fine.
Jerry admitted to his couch of feeling a sharp strange feeling in his stomach, coupled with fast racing of his heart besides the fact that his legs had become stiff and his palms sweaty and clammy. Since they were almost halfway, his fear was mainly steered by the fact that he was a long way from the ground and the rough ground that he would fall on should anything go wrong. He felt that his sense of security was greatly threatened and at some point, Daniel could hear him mumbling words of prayer and his repentance to the Almighty should he fall down and die. In all his coaching experience, Daniel had never met a student so much afraid of heights and yet eager to learn
It was after few steps from halfway that Jerry gradually gained his confidence and started becoming more at ease. They slowly climbed to the top and Jerry gained more experience and exposure. The exercise went on for a while even as they ascended down to the bottom and climbed again for the third time. At the end of the day, though Jerry had found it challenging to climb for the first time, owing to his lack of exposure, experience coupled with his fear for heights, he was excited and thankful to Daniel for the adventure.
