Introduction
Nothing bugs or disturbs us more than when people try to make up certain mythical stories and information in order to scare others. There have been numerous misconceptions regarding the field of dentistry, some of which caused serious effects on human teeth. The government is trying to put various measures in place, such as conducting health education to ensure that people do not adhere to the existing dental misconceptions.
Some of the Misconceptions Concerning About Dentistry
Some of the key misconceptions regarding dentistry include, first, the belief that gum bleeding is not a big issue. This, however, is not the case since; according to the dentist department, bleeding gums are considered to be a key sign that something is not right. In most cases, the healthy gums do not bleed unless one is brushing roughly using a brush. Bleeding gums usually indicate that one is developing gingivitis.
Secondly, the misconception that the baby teeth are not important. According to this myth, when baby teeth get a cavity or even falls out before maturity, that is not a big issue (Barrett, London, Kroger, Hall, & Baratz, 2013). Based on the myth, people tend to believe that even if the teeth fall or develop a cavity, another one will grow to replace the old one. This is, however, not the case since the baby teeth are as important as any other teeth because they tend to hold a place for the permanent teeth. Thirdly, the misconceptions that root canals are extremely painful; while the truth is that, they are not painful at all. The people with the root cavity usually fear to seek dental services since they believe that the procedure will be extremely painful for them to withstand. The thought of pain usually come into play among most individuals, even before the procedure happens. This is, however, not the case since those who have had root canals have indeed confirmed that there is little or no pain involved in the whole procedure.
How One Identifies That, They are Misconceptions and What Information Can Promote a Change in Perception
I always had the perception that these misconceptions were true; therefore, I did not worry much about consulting or visiting the dentistry for regular check-ups. I, however, came to realize that all this were misconceptions through different sources that include. First, from a friend who previously had a dental check-up after developing root cavities. Those who had gone through the root canal procedure informed me that it involved little or no pain. They were also warned of the dangers of gum bleeding and falling of premature teeth, information that they willingly shared with me.
Secondly, through constant reading and review of the dental books and reports. After reading and researching further on these cases, I came to realize that most of the information and details regarding dental health that was shared to us by other people were all misconception. For instance, after further reading, I came to realize that having gum bleeding tends to be a key sign or symptom of developing gingivitis.
Thirdly, through the health education program that I attended in our community centre. Despite have the obligation of focusing or educating people on the critical conditions within the society, the social works also have a role of educating people on the issues regarding oral health. The social workers enlightened us on the diseases and dangers that are affecting most people in the community because of having various misconceptions regarding them. For instance, they enlightened us of the dangers that may occur if one gets root infections or cavities and fails to seek proper medical interventions.
The min information that triggered my change of perception regarding mental health was of how people within the society are developing serious dental complications because of assuming the simple rules or dental measures. For instance, cases of gingivitis are considered to be on the increase within the society. It is perceived that most of these cases mostly occur due to people's negligence or failure to seek medical check-ups.
What You Have Learned and How You Will Use What You Have Learned About Dentistry as a Consumer
I have learnt several things dental health, some of which include, first, it is important to seek dental check-up services at least after every three months. Undergoing dental check-ups usually, play a key role in identifying the dental conditions that are likely to attack an individual and the measures that one should put in place to prevent these attacks. Secondly, it is important to consult qualified dental health professionals rather than seeking dental clarifications from friends and families. In most cases, when we consult other people who are not informed about dental health, they tend to deceive us through mainly through various misconceptions that they may have heard from other sources. Such misconceptions are what cause us to make the wrong decisions regarding our dental health.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I will make use of the information learned to enlighten other peoples within the community on the importance of observing good oral health mainly through seeking regular medical check-up and avoiding adhering to the existing misconceptions. I will also use the information to change or improve my dental habits. For instance, taking the appropriates medical precautions in case I am at risk of developing any dental condition.
