Introduction: A Passion for Public Health and Career Goals
Since I was young, I had a passion for helping people. I knew that Medicine would be the career of choice at that tender age as I saw many of my villagers suffering from various diseases without getting any medical attention due to lack of health personnel and medication. The poor are face many challenges, such as the prevalence of preventable and treatable infectious diseases that account for over 50% of deaths annually. This fact has made me put excessive efforts by gaining more and more knowledge in the field of public health that will help the community and achieve my career goals.
Professional Experience in Medicine and Public Health
After graduating as a Medical Doctor with a Bachelor's Degree in Medicine, I worked in both donor-funded and governmental healthcare institutions from which I gained extensive experience in the field of Medicine. At the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, I worked as a House Officer, where I acquired clinical expertise in Medicine for over a year. I then worked as the Technical Assistant to the Executive Secretary of the FCT Primary Healthcare Agency Board, where I assisted in improving the health of community dwellers through the coordination of all primary healthcare activities in the State where I got an honorary award for my hard work and determination for excellence. In the year 2015, I joined the Department of Epidemiology and Community Health at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital for my rresidency training program in the field of Public Health, where I was retained to work as a Senior Health Registrar. To improve on my skills and expertise, I volunteered as an intern at the USAID-funded Health Financing Project as well as the UKAID-funded Partnership programs that are aimed at Transforming Health Systems II in refining capability for Health Financing and Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health service delivery respectively.
As an Elective Rotator at the General Preventive Medicine Residency Program at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, I was able to increase the scope of knowledge in this prestigious field of Medicine. To gain more experience and skills, I worked as a volunteer at the Nigeria Health Watch, Walter Reed Program Nigeria, United Nations, and the Red Cross Society of Nigeria. From these programs, I was able to gain both clinical and non-clinical (public health) experience, skills and knowledge applicable in epidemiological and population-based approaches that are aimed at advocating for health needs of people as well as developing the capacity to supervise and lead health teams in research as well as delivering healthcare services. Teamwork and leadership roles have enabled me to gain skills for collaboration with relevant stakeholders in planning, implementing, as well as evaluating public health programs. My experience and passion have intensified my interest in pursuing a career that will help in the identification of policy interventions to shape and improve the healthcare system through efficiency and effectiveness.
The Significance of Pursuing a DrPH Program
The DrPH program covers high-level mastery in Data and Analysis, Leadership, Management and Governance, Policy and Programs, Education and Workforce Development, which are aligned to my career objectives that are aimed at developing the capacity to find solutions to various complex public health problems. This program will enable me attain knowledge, skills, and experience that will assist in leading public health programs through the formulation and implementation of local, national, and global health policies.
By choosing the prominent Boston University School of Public Health I believe that I will earn the highest professional degree in the field of public health. This will be through the practice-oriented as well as the interdepartmental DrPH program which will make me to become a all-rounded Public Health Physician. This great institution will provide me with the best and suitable study conditions that will allow me to acquire broad community skills and expertise required to succeed in the health workforce.
