Information Technology (IT) is a professional field that is used by many companies for information and communication as a mean of technological knowledge on the current business operations that takes place within and outside the organization. Orlikowski and Robey (1991) defined IT as the usage of networking, computers, storage, and other processes to create process, accumulate, save, secure, and exchange all forms of electronic information.
There is constant development that occurs within this field, and many people find it challenging to stay in their current workplace and hence making them opt for other professions. IT changes with how an individual competes. Bikson and Panis (1997) suggested that some of the trends might include building a barrier to entry into the premises, to construct in switching costs, and even to transform the basis of competition within the market entirely. The developments experienced within this field are to make the CIO of an organization regulate both the proper level of expenses and the proper management structure for IT.
According to Sullivan (2004), he urged that methods that can be used by the CIO and other IT professionals to maintain their current profession include: turning to engineers where the CIO organize an architecture forum after every three months by getting engineers to talk about their product development road map using the experiences from practitioners and product managers. The forum provides opportunities for engineers to give their opinions on where the company should invest and where there is a commercial opportunity within the market, and engineers can tell IT professionals to know where technology should be improved.
Another method is to monitor social media such as LinkedIn and Tweeter as a source of information to see customers' preferences. Look to the next generation also help to stay in his current workplace since many young employees push the limits of the new technology. They improve technology by breaking the rules and playing with the possibilities within the organizations. Looking up to the next generation helps professionals to know what is in their mind and use the same knowledge to know what is happening around the world when the need to improve Information technology arises. Doing this enables them to be aware of what is happening in the IT field.
When IT professionals and the CIO apply the use of a top-down and bottom-up approach as a method to stay in their current work play, it helps them to stay ahead of the developing technology within the organization. In the top-down approach, they should use apps like Flipboard to find relevant information on the technology. The bottom-up approach also helps professionals to learn from fellow employees' perspectives and listen to their ideas on how they should work using the new technology.
There is also the idea of management and emerging trends in technology and society within the app. The need to balance new and traditional media sources is also another method of maintaining the current working place. It can be achieved by attending conferences and networking opportunities organized so that to acquire the new knowledge on the improved technology. They are also advised to keep their eyes peeled for boot camps and exclusive programs that might be used within the organization to improve their IT. The professionals are encouraged to read and research firms as a method of maintaining their current working place. They should do this by reading the latest books, magazines, and industry publications on new technology. They should also subscribe to e-mail newsletters related to information technology.
