Introduction
The community mental health agency, in this case, is the Community Mental Health Partnership of Southeast Michigan (CMHPSM), which functions as the regional body for services to do with mental health, substance use disorders, and developmental disabilities (Community Mental Health Washtenaw Country Michigan, 2018). The policies discussed below are family planning and medication administration, medication Storage, and other medical treatment.
Family Planning
Family planning involves the use of birth control techniques in the planning of the number of children. Family planning policy deals with the guidelines to be used in informing beneficiaries and their legal representatives (parent of a minor, legal guardian, patient advocate) of family planning and health information services available. It applies to all staff, volunteers, students, and contractual organizations related to CMHPSM (Community Mental Health Washtenaw County, 2018).
This policy is to be administered by case managers, supports coordinators, and designated staff to inform and provide referral assistance for available family planning and health information and should not offer referrals when it comes to pregnancy termination by a minor without the minor's legal representative consent. The sole responsibility of decisions on family planning will be carried by the beneficiary or legal representative. This policy can further be improved by providing educational materials concerning family planning online and at the site using booklets, brochures, leaflets, and so on (Community Mental Health Washtenaw County, 2018).
Medication Administration, Medication Storage, and Other Medical Treatment
This policy’s aim is how psychotropic ad other medications are managed, stored, and the procedures to be involved in medical treatment for CMHPSM and apply to all staff and contractual organizations. The administration of medication and medical treatments is done only at the order of a physician using the highest standards of medical practice and delegation of prescription authority to a practicing nurse, clinical nurse specialist, or physician assistant to be supervised following the Michigan Public Health Code (1978 P.A. 368).
Training on medication should be done by qualified personnel who provide standards for administering and medication management. The treatment procedures which require authorizations have an exception in case of emergencies where an injury occurs. First, aid is required, which does not require orders from a physician and is for the therapeutic benefit of the patient.
Medication administration and dispensing are to be properly done following a medication order that can be written, oral, or in a signed electronic form. There are standards to be applied, which must be followed, such as; where there is misuse, proper storage and records' update, when destroying expired, discontinued, recalled, or unused medication with proper records and reports issued. The medication must be its original container and be well labeled. When dispensing medication, proper consumer identification must be made through the photograph, name comparison, or with the help of other staff. Adequate supply must always be maintained, and errors and adverse reactions to be reported immediately (Community Mental Health Washtenaw County, 2018).
Storage of medications, including those to be refrigerated, is to be safeguarded as follows; use of the double-locked system, only authorized staff to have access to keys, inventory check through internal reviews or external audits, an incident report to be completed in case of a recall or discontinuation of medication once a consumer is notified (Community Mental Health Washtenaw County, 2018).
Conclusion
For the above policies to be effectively implemented, proper training programs should be put in place through extensive research. Seminars, materials, and other educational facilities to be made available to all staff, recipients, and all others involved as well as monitoring done through follow-ups, audits, and continuous programs with protocols put in place to ensure the policies and procedures are well followed especially when it comes to medication.
