COVID- 19 is also referred to as the Coronavirus that spreads through droplets in the air from an animal to an individual or person to person. COVID-19 is a respiratory virus that has affected many people and has spread in over 120 countries in the past three months. The virus was discovered in December 2019 in China and was first identified in cats and later transmitted to human beings. The United States has reported 3800 cases of individuals infected with COVID-19 and has registered 69 deaths (Wang et al., 2020). However, there are 175982 cases that have been reported of the Coronavirus, while 6717 deaths have been registered across the globe (Wang et al., 2020). The COVID-19 virus was declared as a pandemic by World Health Organization (WHO) in March 2020.
The government has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic in various ways. For instance, the government has placed a travel ban of all citizens to countries that have reported many cases of the virus such as China and Italy. Besides, the government has banned inbound flights that originate from such countries. The government has also embarked on vigorous screening of people at entry points at the borders and ports. The government has purchased enough protective gear, masks, as well as COVID-19 test kits (Wang et al., 2020). In addition, the government has placed sanitizers in all public and private amenities such as bus stations and shopping malls to help individuals sanitize their hands.
Moreover, the government, through the department of health, has embarked on an initiative to create awareness and educate citizens on basic hygiene practices such as regular washing of hands using soap and running water, use of sanitizers, as well as observing sneezing and coughing hygiene. The government has also banned all public meetings and gatherings and encouraged citizens to keep a distance of one meter far from each other. For individuals who have been pre-exposed to the virus, the government has encouraged them to self-quarantine for 14 days, which is the incubation period for COVID-19. In some states, the government has encouraged employees to work from home where possible as well as requested students to study using online platforms.
Besides, the government has identified isolation centers where the infected are managed until recovery. The government has set aside an emergency fund to help fight the spread of the virus. Also, the government has responded to the virus by training health care providers on how to identify individuals likely to have been infected (Wang et al., 2020). The government has introduced a call center where individuals suspected to have contracted the virus can call and report the case for help. The government has invested in research and development through WHO to help in the study of the virus, which will result in its cure and vaccination. In addition, the government has instructed individuals who have recently traveled out of the country to self-quarantine for at least two weeks and keep off close contact with people. The department of health has advised citizens to prevent handshaking as well as touching their faces, especially the mouth, nose, and eyes.
