Introduction
Cloud data storage is a new technology where instead of saving data on local systems or hardware, it is stored on the cloud. Users gain access to data stored on the cloud by having an internet connection. Cloud data storage has gained widespread use since its origin. The reason many companies and individuals are switching to the cloud is due to its numerous advantages over traditional physical storage. Cloud data storage comes in various forms, which means that it is designed for different users. However, despite its numerous advantages, cloud data storage has several drawbacks that limit its use. Although cloud data storage has revolutionized the way individuals and companies store data offering many benefits, it has several disadvantages that need to be rectified to convince more users to make the switch.
Benefits of Cloud Data Storage
The first benefit is the ease of access of data stored. Cloud technology requires users to register, after which they gain access to the data from anywhere, using any device. One of the things that made flash disks popular was their portability. However, with cloud, users have both portability and ease of access as they do not have to carry any devices that may be lost in the process.
Another advantage is the high security of data. Cloud takes several measures such as certification, auditing, and encryption to protect its data from unauthorized access (Abdalla and Varol). Cloud also removes the need for physical devices that are prone to viruses that may harm large companies leading to loss of data. Also, cloud storage is not affected by disasters such as fire, which would otherwise destroy physical data storage.
Cloud also offers flexibility and cost-effectiveness. Users have the option of selecting different plans with varying storage capacities. Therefore, users can select cloud data storage that is within their budget, and whenever they need more capacity, they just have to subscribe to a different plan. Overall, cloud storage is also relatively cheap, as it eliminates costly systems (Abdalla and Varol). Data backup and recovery is also easier than traditional means (Apostu et al.). Cloud service providers have competent professionals who facilitate this process, making it simple and efficient.
Drawbacks of Cloud Data Storage
The first drawback is that users cannot access data if there is a lack of internet connection. Therefore in case, a user is in an area with poor or no connection, they cannot access the data. Slow bandwidth is also another concern that may limit the speed and effectiveness of accessing data.
Despite measures to ensure data security, cloud storage involves users surrendering their data to the provider (Apostu et al.). This lack of control may pose a risk of leaks of sensitive data. Cloud data storage is also susceptible to hackers who gain access to data that may harm companies.
Also, cloud data storage has technical issues that limit its use. At times the system may have problems and may prevent users from gaining access to their data. As a result, there are delays, thus making cloud data storage unreliable. Finally, some providers have poor support. When users encounter challenges or seek clarification, they have a hard time getting support as they are forced to wait for long periods to get feedback.
Conclusion
Cloud has had a significant impact on the way users store data. Due to its ease of access, reliability, enhanced security, cost-effectiveness, and flexibility, cloud data storage has gained preference among many organizations. However, technical issues, reliability on the internet connection, and lack of reliable support are potential drawbacks that need to be addressed.
