Introduction

As a child, I felt out of place and rather uncomfortable when visiting the dental clinic. I was frightened of all the loud instruments and strangely-dressed people there. However, I was fortunate to meet a very patient dentist and over the years, my experiences became amazing. These included having a television in the waiting room as well as the dentist paying me a dollar to act as a dental hygienist assistant. I later began to look forward to going to the dental facility, but never thought this would be my future career.

When I joined high school, I didn’t have a clue about my career choice. When I lost my grandmother in the second week of school, I decided I wanted to become a funeral director and embalmer. After my senior year of high school, I still wanted to venture into that area but had financial problems. However, I remembered my experience with my childhood dentist and therefore, decided that dentistry would be a good opportunity for me to earn a living, hence enrolled in Astrodome Career Center.

Internship

I was an excellent student as I passed my state registration on the first try. Upon finishing my studies, I sought an internship at Lovett Dental Center where I was later employed. Despite loving my job there, my goal was to become a funeral director and embalmer. I, therefore, enrolled in a mortuary school as I also worked part-time as a dental assistant.

In my third year, Ms. Ana Garcia joined the dental team, and after two weeks the office manager decided she needed assistance. I offered to help in that position and I learned a lot concerning dental hygiene. It was through this experience that I finally decided to be a full-time dental hygiene assistant. Moreover, I started loving my work as I helped patients in observing their oral health.

Activities

I observed the daily tasks that a dental hygienist carried out which included cleaning the patients’ teeth, hence gained knowledge on the same. I also learned how to create relationships with the patients and understood the traits required for one to be successful in that sector.

Favorite and Least Favorite Aspects

I love having a good rapport with patients, therefore creating sound relationships with them. I am also enthusiastic about teaching them about dental hygiene, and seeing an improvement in their oral health.

I disliked the fact that many people did not care about their dental hygiene.

Conclusion

I am not only appealed by helping the patients have oral health, but by also building a relationship with them. Moreover, I make sure to provide the very best possible care. I truly believe that I possess the characteristics of being a successful dental hygienist.
As an extremely organized and goal-oriented person. I am also passionate about caring for people can make them comfortable in uncomfortable situations.
