First, the advancement of technology has dramatically influenced the education system, clearly evident to all of us. But does this impact mean the institution should accept the BYOD proposal? I don't see it this way. BYOD would result in the distraction of the learning environment. The use of tablets and smartphones in the classroom will destroy the learners' attentiveness since these gadgets tend to have notification features that alert the user when he or she has a new message, email, video, or a call. Thus the learners cannot concentrate on the lesson when they hear a notification in their cellphones. This will, in turn, result in poor academic grades.

Secondly, these gadgets require the internet, which is not freely available but should be purchased. What happens to children who are from poor backgrounds whose parents are having financial challenges? BYOD will result in the creation of different groups in the classroom of the haves, and they have not, which is not correct. The aim of education is equity; thus, BYOD will not be useful for all learners because of different backgrounds. Also, other learners are not in a position of purchasing those gadgets leave alone the internet for supporting the device.

Thirdly, there are several cases of cyberbullying on the internet. There are several social media platforms and apps in which learners can get access. Learners may end up picking up on each other and start sharing abusive or shaming information on these sites. The learners are swayed away by the comments ongoing in their platforms rather than focusing on the lesson. This action will result in anxiety and depression in the learners, resulting in poor classroom grades, antisocial behaviors, or even dropping out of school. Talking from my own experience, I was once bullied through social media, and I can assure you it dramatically affects the mind to an extend I could not eat, drink or even study since my focus was on the bully.

Fourth, technology in the classroom will weaken the social skills, where earners will be concentrating on their gadgets rather than interacting with their fellow learners and teachers in terms of discussions and asking questions for clarification. Due to this, the learners will have reduced attention spans and the inability to sustain concentration on a difficult assignment.

Additionally, teachers will have a hard time controlling the classroom because all learners are not equal. How sure will the teacher be that all the learners having those gadgets in their hands are doing what the teacher is instructing them to do? How will the teacher monitor the activities of all learners at a time with electronic devices in the classroom? Some might be playing games, watching movies, or on other social media sites such as LinkedIn. What will happen during exam times? These devices can be used to cheat in examinations.

Conclusion

In conclusion, do not get me wrong. I was once a student in this great institution, and most of the reasons I have given there am talking out of the experience. The target of most learners will be to get to school and start using their gadgets. Just remember, as I have told you, the institution should reject the BYOD proposal because it distracts attention, may lead to cyberbullying, cheating in the examination, and a hard time for teachers to control the classroom. I take this time to appreciate the first the almighty God for making this day successful. Secondly, the management of this institution for giving me this opportunity to stand on this podium as well as you who created time out of your busy schedules to attend this meeting.
