Introduction
Effective teaching and learning are processes that involve continuous research actions that enable the school to improve the performance of the students. In an interview with the principal, the findings reveal that the leaders use various methods to assess teaching and to learn in schools, and employing strategies that help in the development of school culture and climate.
Ways of Assessing the Effectiveness of Teaching and Learning
Educational research has proved that there exists a coherent relationship and shared characteristics of teaching and learning. Interviewing the principal reveals that he conducts frequent assessments and regular feedback in assessing what the teachers do while in the classroom. Also, he can verify if there is any learning taking place to benefit the students. Further, the assessment of teaching and learning by the principal takes yet another dimension of anticipating the areas of the study which will present challenges to the students. Hence, the school heads develop useful strategies that will enable the learners to understand class concepts.
The school principal applies transformational leadership in assessing the effectiveness of teaching and learning in the school. This leadership style enables the principal to evaluate the improvement of students and also promote their academic progress. Besides, assessing students' performance requires the principal to focus on the expectations of learners and teachers. Therefore, he can emphasize on instructions, provide a platform for professional development, and most importantly using the data about the students to monitor their progress.
Also, the school principal, is a vision holder who keeps the school's dream at heart having he assessment of teaching and learning as his main objective ("The Principal's Role in the Instructional Process: Implications for At-Risk Students - Issues ...about Change, The Principal's Role in the Instructional Process: Implications for At-Risk Students, Volume 1, Number 3", 2019).
Allocation of resources and materials in teaching is another means that the principal uses to assess the teaching and learning processes in the school effectively. When the teachers strive to provide the basic teaching necessities, the principal also does his part of supplementing the teachers' efforts by allocating various resources and materials. Again, the assessment of the students allows the school leaders to know what takes place in the classroom hence better placed to determine and provide the materials and resources that teachers need in the classes. The principal also makes frequent visits to the school to interact with students during the assessment. Moreover, the leaders upon interacting with students use this opportunity to communicate with their teachers hence providing attention to their efforts and instructional progress.
Strategies Employed by the Principals
The school principal fosters a culture of resilience to affect the development of this institution. Beginning from the leadership office, the leader models effective ways of reacting and coping with stress, decision set-backs, and solving the disputes arising in the school. Therefore, he gives the expected guidelines that enable the students and teachers means of focusing at the top and bouncing back while also adjusting to the challenges in school. Again, the school head communicates well and regularly. He ensures that not only there is involvement of students, teacher, and parents in academic matters but also their active participation in building an inclusive culture. Hence, eliminating suspicious feeling and hostile teaching and learning environment. The principal further confirms that based on his effective communication with the stakeholders within the school, the students can understand what the culture requires from them. This understanding enables them to move forward in learning ("How to Build A Positive School Culture and Climate That's Awesome," 2019).
Embracing social and emotional learning for both teachers and students is another important strategy that the principal uses to influence the cultural climate of the school. Most significantly, the classroom, unlike in the past, is no longer just a place for imparting knowledge but a center that promotes wholistic growth of the learners. The involvement of social-emotional learning enables the students to and the staff to remain mindful of challenges relating to emotions hence, creating a favorable room for active learning.
From the above concepts, it is evident that the principal plays a vital role in the assessment of active learning and teaching processes. Through his efforts in conducting instructional methods in school, the principal engages in crucial activities that ensure that students obtain the best academic gains out of the learning activities. For instance, when the school head conducts a continuous assessment and regularly follows up the classroom activities, he can verify if the students make meaningful gains in the lessons offered to them. Moreover, the principal applies the concept of transformational leadership in following up the students' progress and also enhancing their achievement in school.
The process of developing cultural practices in schools also involve the use of specific strategies that enable all the teachers and students to conform to the school norms and expectations. Based on the leadership styles offered by the school head, the students within the school can adopt measures that contribute to their holistic growth hence allowing them to cope with challenges as well as addressing them. Moreover, promoting active involvement and participation in academic matters forms another critical aspect of the cultural development strategy in the school.
