Alex had been fast asleep. He had been sleeping for the past eight hours and could hardly notice the events that were happening outside. The previous day he had been out fishing with his dad; an adventure that had seemed fruitless after several trials to no avail. The land had been dry for a while and the lakeside was almost no exception, the water on the shoes were on rare minimal. The encounter had left them not only very disappointed but also exhausted as well. They, therefore, opted to retire to bed early, just immediately after their evening meal.
During the day, the weather had been unusually calm, a few clouds could be seen from a distance but according to the folks of that area, the clouds were meaningless as they had been that way for some time now yet nothing seemed to change. It was during the wee hours of the night that raindrops could be heard on the roofs. At first, it was slow but with the passing of time, the drops increased and this time with a thud. Alex was suddenly woken up by the noise. He was puzzled by the noise as he thought that someone was throwing stones on the roof. He quickly rushed to the window and was shocked to see hailstones and a huge downpour.
This was a rare type of downpour as rains of countless rocks from the sky hit the ground with a thud. With time the hailstones increased in size as they fell like big stones and some roofs started collapsing and windows too could be heard breaking. As if that was not enough, Alex's homebred animals' fella victim as the roof that house the animals fell down and the and the hot stone like hailstones fell on them. It was amidst struggles that the animals succumbed to death shortly afterward. Alex and his dad's efforts to save them were next to impossible as no one could go out and anyone who attempted to do otherwise died instantly due to the hot hailstones.
This was no ordinary rain, Alex and his dad had speculated that they might have been meteorites or perhaps fragments from a larger object of stone that had broken high in the atmosphere. It went on for a while as it hit the ground like a shotgun blast that sent fear and chills on people. A situation like this had never once been experienced in Kinangop area. The area had once been a peaceful and fruitful land, save for a short famine that had hit it in the recent past; and this wired calamity that was hitting the land at this particular time was one of its kind; something that no one had seen nor anticipated for/
It was after a period of almost six hours that this tragic event stopped. Many animals had died including the aquatic life. As if that was not enough, there was a significant loss of life of folks, who in the quest to rescue their animals and out of curiosity of knowing whatever was going on outside, succumbed to their early deaths. The area which had been initially densely populated became sparse in just a matter of six hours as several were left homeless. The event had happened so fast and unanticipated. The few folks left in the area including Alex and his dad were forced to flee the area for fear of another similar attack in the future.
It has been three years now and the events of that night are still very fresh on Alex's memory. The families that lost their loved ones, animals and their homes are yet to come to tomes with their current situation; a situation that they now have to adapt to, an unexplained situation, not anticipated, yet very tragic.
