Elements of a Well-Written Mission
I am a member of the Boy Scouts of America (BAS) which was founded in 1910. It is an organization for young men and boys who are between the ages of seven to twenty-two years old. The organization is part of the international scout movement with its goal is to impact youth with knowledge that will make them become better people in the society. In America, over two million youths are members of the organization and more than one million adults are participants in it. The association is a nonprofit institution because of the fact that its national council is registered as a 501(C) (3) nonprofit organization and is funded by private persons, membership fees, and company sponsors. The United States of America president is the head of the Boy Scouts of America which has been the tradition since the beginning of the organization (Boy Scouts of America).
The mission statement of the Boy's Scout of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. The scout oath states that the scouts will "On their honor they will do their most excellent, to do their obligation to God and their nation. And to respect the Scout Law; to lend a helping hand to other people at all times; to keep them physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight (Boy Scouts Of America).
In the first place, the foremost element required of a well-written mission statement is a function. A mission statement needs to have in its description the role of the organization e.g. "to provide management consulting services". The Boy's Scout of America mission statement meets this requirement as it states that it intends to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices. This explains to its members and other people the functions of the association.
Similarly, the second element required of a well-written mission statement is that it should express the values and principles that guide the organization. The Boy's Scout of America mission statement meets this requirement since it brings out the organization values in the scout's oath and the scout law. The third element required of a well-written statement is that it should show the policies and standards of the organization. This trickles down to day to day policies of the organization and the standards of conduct. The Boy Scouts of America meets this requirement since its everyday policies reflect the policies that they advocate for and the scouts behave themselves in the manner set by the mission statement.
Additionally, the last element of a well-written mission statement is that it should provide the strategy of the organization. The Boy Scout of America mission statement meets this requirement as it shows how it plans to operate in the society.
Project manager
A project manager may perform some functions that are normally under the purview of a chief executive officer. This person is very useful in project manager because he/she is the one who develops the labor and organizes resources for the project (Meredith, and Mantel, 85). The design phase of a project is the stage that comes after the definition phase. This phase requires members of the group to come up with designs of how the project can be done effectively. Moreover, things like flowcharts, prototypes, sketches are mostly made during this stage of a project.
In the event that a project results in total failure the persons who will be held responsible by the stakeholders of the project are normally the project manager. This is because of the mere fact that he is the one who coordinates all the activities of the person's involvement in the project.
There are pros and cons to the appointment of a project manager during the design phase. Firstly it is very tiresome and time-consuming when it comes to the selection of a planning team. This is as a result of the late appointment of a project manager which denied the manger the get well acquainted with the members of the project in order for him/her to be able to gauge their strengths and weaknesses thus select them as part of the planning team.
Secondly, budgeting for the project becomes a problem due to lack of exposure to the resources that are to be used in the project. Risk planning is also another con associated with the appointment of a project manager in the design phase. This is as a result of them not being in a position to immediately evaluate and assess the risks that are associated with the project. There are several pros to the appointment of a new project manager in the design phase. The first pro is that the manager is able to create a roadmap that would help them complete the project in a timely manner. Secondly is that the project manager is able to communicate with other members of the project about their duties and the roles from start to finish.
Complex projects do not usually go well with a decision requiring the appointment of a project manager in the design phase which is as a result of a breakdown in communication. The reason for this is that complex projects require all the people involved to understand their roles effectively and appointment of a project manager will defeat this purpose since a project manager is required to explain and make sure the members of the project understand their roles and this is likely not to happen for the mere reason the appointment of a project manager.
