Student's Name:-Institutional Affiliation:-Speech-Language Pathology is the identification of a speech and language problem using specific diagnostic procedures to elucidate causal facts. A Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) is a professional trained to identify, diagnose and cure talking, language, communication and ingesting problems. Damage to neurons which occur at brain injury prevents the effective transmission of an impulse to organs of speech together with clear reception of sound from the ears to the brain. Here, I discuss the role of SLPs in victims of Central Nervous System(CNS) injury as well as the effectiveness of these professionals.
The principal method of assessment in SLPs identify speech and cognition anomalies is through analysis of patient records. Injuries of the brain and spinal cord are identified by psychiatric clinicians using body scans like computerized tomography or analysis of visible clinical symptoms that manifest with nervous system injuries (Brougham et al., 2011).
According to Gordan,W. et al.(2012), SLPs analyze these records as well as observing external cognitive-communication deficits in patients. SLPs assist victims of CNS injury by offering guidance on better methods of self-expression. SLPs may introduce the patients to compensatory procedures like the use of technology gadgets like smartphones for reminders. Assistants may also come in handy to remind patients on various tasks.
Although treatment of some CNS injury victims is dedicated more to the treatment of other associated maladies like tetraplegia and dysphagia, cognitive-communication therapy plays an important role. The CNS injury patients can communicate better with the people surrounding them. These may include family members or clinicians. Clinicians can obtain information from the patient important in diagnosis together with collecting feedback on the patients' overall state of health. Patients of Speech-Language therapy are also able to use their memory better after learning alternative coping strategies. Patients can also return to an initial productive state of offering their skills to people even with their cognitive disorders present (Brain Injury Law Centre n.d). Speech-Language pathologists provide important coping strategy even if they don't provide a cure for damaged nerves in patients.
