Introduction

Initially, the nursing practice was on the basis of the medical model. However, in the recent decades, there have been serious thoughts on the unique scope as well as the domain of nursing as nurse scholars explore the nature as well as the purposes for which nursing exist. This has led to the development of nursing theories to act as the foundation for the nursing practice together with education. Such efforts have resulted in the motivation among nurses to examine the heritage of nursing alongside the goals and values upon which the practice is based. The theories focus on establishing metaparadigms for nursing, a representation of interest to nursing. Currently, the nursing metaparadigm centers on the concepts such as the person, health, the environment and nursing itself. The nursing philosophy seeks to examine the likely changes in nursing practice and the implications of the changes in nursing education.

Nurse as Detective

In applying the role of the nurse as a detective, the nurse is expected to use their clinical imagination in combination with the nursing science in detecting changes that are difficult to analyze, together with the deviations from the patterns that are expected of a being in not only preventing but also controlling the outcomes that might be harmful to the patients. Apart from detecting the changes and deviations, a nurse acting as a detective is also expected to use their clinical imagination together with the nursing science in judging and also determining the effects of the changes that are challenging in analysis and the deviations from the patterns that are expected of a being in order to prevent or even control harmful results. Nursing as a body of knowledge should, therefore, advocate for the promotion and preservation of human health. The philosophy behind it is concerned with pursuing the knowledge in a wider perspective (Blais, Hayes, Kozier, & Erb, 2015). An investigation as a detective enables the nurse to understand the primary generalizations, assumptions, values, concepts, and purposes of nursing education.

Nurse as Scientist

Scientists are researchers who constantly seek answers to numerous questions of significance. The series of questions are aimed at developing with a primary focus, the contents together with key areas of concern of the conceptual model that is used in solving a problem. As a scientist, the nurse is tasked with the participation in the science in informing decisions made within the healthcare system. By participating in the decision-making process for the healthcare system, the nurse ought to carry out tasks such as criticism, dissemination, as well as implementation of the evidence with the aim of influencing the practice in the most desirable manner that ensures achievement of the goals of the theories of the practice (Masters, 2014). Still, when acting in the capacity of the scientist, the nurse is supposed to utilize the translational science in influencing the decisions within the healthcare system, for instance, prescribing and implementing best practice within the healthcare system, and also widely distributing the findings to other relevant areas of practice to be used in decision-making as well.

Nurse as Manager of Healing Environment

While acting in the capacity of the manager of the healing environment, the nurse tends to have a bigger and more involving tasks since the healing environment has a worldwide aspect which includes several responsibilities such as regulations, healthcare policy, and finance. With the acknowledgment of these areas of considerations, the nurse is charged with the responsibility of creating, coordinating, and advocating for an environment that is not only respectful but also has the elements of interdisciplinary that are capable of promoting the optimal well-being besides affirming the dignity of the human experience. Additionally, when the nurse acts in this position, they are supposed to well equipped with the knowledge that given the global nature of the healing environment, it has effects that are felt socially, politically, culturally, and economically. With this knowledge, the nurse, being a member of an inter-professional community, has an influence on the public policy as well as the promotion of the social justice in as far as the human health experience is concerned.

Conclusion

The paradigms of nursing discussed above are a representation of abstract conceptual models of nursing that are both diverse and provide specific perspectives on the concepts of metaparadigms. Each model presents nursing conceptualized differently from different perspectives. The models put forward specific views concerning the nature of relationships between the person and the environment as well as various cognitive orientations to nursing. The models are helpful in organizing knowledge in nursing and also prescribing nursing practice together with research and education. With this knowledge, it is necessary for nurses to assess the models and how relevant they can be in the present nursing practice and education. There is a need for the nurse instructors, in particular, to do an analysis of the models because nursing knowledge has quickly become organized as developed from the abstract conceptual models. Additionally, the models point out the purposes that need to be fulfilled through nursing education and as such the curriculum together with the processes of education, should realize those purposes as the goals.
