It was with great pleasure and honor in completing my bachelors of science in nursing (BSN). It took me fours of hard work, dedication, determination, discipline, and teamwork to complete this degree. As I look forward to being a registered nurse, I would like to admit that I have gained a lot of skills which are not the only nurse based but also individual skills. Among personal achievement, I can admit that I am more disciplined than I was when starting the course. On matters of time management and organization, I am happy to say that I am now a better person. I know that with RN comes with more supervisory and responsibility skills. Good news is that RN will also come with higher salaries. In the four years of study, I have been able to achieve general education requirements and expected course outcomes. The following paper will discuss how I was able to accomplish the course expected results.
Outcome 1
From this program outcome, I learned that provision of high-quality and affordable health care becomes very difficult every day. For this reason, researchers and health providers must look for primary-secondary evidence-based healthcare interventions that will improve the health conditions of a community. Through research, I identified that one way of reducing and preventing morbidity, health disparities and mortality is by encouraging healthy eating lifestyles. It is through this program that I was able to plan and implement a healthy eating plan for people suffering from chronic diseases such as asthma and kidney failure. The idea was entirely based on healthy feeding habits. The program majorly focused on eating a lot of vegetables and fruits and minimizing the number of fats and cholesterol intake. Additionally, the plan encouraged regular exercise to keep the body fit.
Outcome 2
Without a doubt, effective communication is essential in the healthcare setting. Without proper communication and communication channels, it would be challenging to offer healthcare services. Lack of sufficient communication encourages space for medical errors which can cause serious injuries or sometimes death. I have learned that effective communication is which that helps vertical as well as the horizontal passage of information. Besides collaboration goes hand in hand with effective communication. Team collaboration encourages respect, trust and mutual understanding among team members. I was able to achieve effective communication when interacting with patient, staffs, visitors, and administration by practicing the virtue of listening. I learned that when people don't pay attention to what is being said, they tend to have mistakes in their operations. Additionally, among patients, I created an open environment where they could feel free to express what they think and their concerns. With staff members, I always expressed my concerns and any other information using proper language and without fear.
Outcome 3
Critical thinking in nursing is vital. It helps in providing quality healthcare and avoid adverse events and injuries to patients and any other party. Through the program, I have realized that nurses are faced with challenges and dilemmas every day while practicing. When making decisions in nursing and offering diagnostic reasoning, I always made sure that I integrated evidence-based theories, ethical standards, and stipulated principles. This was to make sure that in case of any inquiries, I would have grounds on which I came up with a particular decision. In some cases, there was no exact principle guiding decision making. This was more so in emergencies where it was difficult to look at theories and required principles. In such instances, I integrated the principles of autonomy, beneficence, and non-maleficence, as well as the principle of justice. These three helped me to make decisions that will result in improved care.
Outcome 4
It is almost given that one will come across people of different culture, beliefs and values in the healthcare sector. These people may be the patients seeking medical services or colleagues and workplace. The way one interacts with people of a different culture will determine the outcomes of services. Since I was dealing with such people in my program, I made plans to encourage positive cultural diversity. One way I was able to build collegial and collaborative caring relationship was by having positive communication styles. For example, I would always regard a person as Mr., Mrs., sir or madam. Furthermore, I always projected the attitude of confidence, respecting and listening to all people and treating family members as individuals. Finally, I always did background research on various cultures to understand different interaction styles, the perception of medical care and critical values.
Outcome 5
Promoting the health of a population has become important than never before. Health providers have realized that the health wellbeing is beyond health concepts and are attributed to other factors such as globalization, biological risk factors, behavioral risk factors and chronic non-communicable factors. For this reason, researchers have turned to encouraging behavioral changes to promote health wellbeing. Personally, I was able to design a plan which was aimed at encouraging behavioral change especially among cigarette smokers and those who are hooked on consumption of high-fat diet. The plan involved first helping the affected to accept that they are undergoing problems. Secondly, the plan aimed at teaching individuals about the dangers of smoking and high fat intake. Lastly, the idea focused on interventions that include clinical interventions, adherence and addressing psychological risk factors.
Outcome 6
Not only in the health sector but are other sectors also dealing with the problem of scarce resources. Resources should, therefore, be used sparingly and in the right manner. I was able to achieve analysis and management of resources in healthcare through strategic planning. Using strategic, planning I was able to show the administration that they can manage and allocate the scarce resources which include money and time. Strategic planning also included analysis of projected technology improvement, looking at the changes in health care and nursing marketing industry as well as the availability of material and human resources. Using strategic planning, I was able to find major problems facing healthcare sector, critical issues affecting the organization, and introducing new strategies, technology, and resources that are environmentally friendly.
Outcome 7
Regardless of the position in nursing, one will be required time to time to illustrate leadership and personal skills in the health industry. It is through this program that I have been able to achieve some of the critical leadership skills. Some of these skills include; openness, honesty, and conscientiousness. Furthermore, I was taught ways to be self-aware, resourceful and have excellent communication skills.
Outcome 8
Evidence-based decision making is highly encouraged in the health sector. However, I have learned that it is important to appraise and synthesize current scholarly material. Otherwise, poor translation and appraisal can lead to problems. I was able to access, appraise and synthesize current scholarly resources using computer-based approach. Using computer and internet, it was easy to find current resources and finding whether there are academic or not.
Summing up, BSN program has taught me a lot concerning nursing. I have incorporated leadership skills into my nursing skills. I have also gained a lot of understanding of utilizing evidence-based practices in nursing. This skills will be fundamental in my career as an RN. I will know how to make decisions, interact with people of different cultures, to conduct effective research and having required leadership skills.
