I remember June 2012 like it was yesterday. One particular afternoon I decided to take a walk to the mall nearest to our house. While on the footpath, I could see cars moving fast past me as people sped back to their offices for their afternoon shifts. I wore my headphones and slowly walked towards the mall. Just as I was a few meters from the entrance, I recall hearing a screech of tires behind me. However, as I was turning to look and see what was happening, I felt the impact of a car's bonnet against my chest and fell. I remember screaming at the top of my voice, having been overcome by horror and an overwhelming sense of fear at the thought that I was about to die. As I slowly lost consciousness, I could vaguely see a crowd of people gather around me before everything became completely blurry and I passed out.

I must have been unconscious for at least a day before I came to. My whole body ached and my vision was still blurry. Waking up might have been my own personal miracle, but at the time, I felt like my insides were being constantly hammered by a miner who had no intention of stopping anytime soon. I was also unable to move my limbs. However, when I could easily make out the images in my room, I discovered that my aunt Guerda was standing at the entrance of the room. I must have made some noise because she turned and hastily walked towards my bed. She talked about how I was lucky to be alive since the accident had resulted in several fractures that made and three broken ribs that doctors had said were pretty serious. She explained that one of her friends had been on sight and she immediately called for an ambulance that rushed me to North Shore Hospital.

After a few hours, the drug that had been injected into my body began to wear off and I was able to move my arm and leg since I had a broken arm and broken ankle. Aunt Guerda helped me to sit up comfortably, although I could still feel pain. She sat with me till evening after which she left, promising to come back the following morning. That night two of the nurses that were in charge kept checking on me and providing with painkillers whenever my pain intensified.

The following morning, my aunt came back at 8 o'clock. Since I was still in pain from my fractured limbs and broken ribs, she washed me and later fed e. She did this for the next two days, ensuring that I took my medication as prescribed. The nurses also ensured that I was comfortable at night and well-fed during my stay at the hospital. On the fourth day, the doctor declared that I was fit enough to be discharged, although I would be required to go back to the hospital for my checkup.

Conclusion

As I left the hospital, I remember feeling joyous and very happy to be alive and out of the hospital. I realized that I had taken my life for granted and that it could be taken away at any moment. This time was also the turning point of my life since I made the decision to study hard and become a nurse. I wanted to care for people the same way my aunt and the nurses had done. I realized that dedicating my life to such an important course would be the best thing to have come out of my misfortune.
