Introduction

A values-based organization (VBO) emphasizes shared core values of culture among all employees. Unlike the traditional structure, which is rigid and hierarchical, a VBO is characterized by clearly set ground rules that form the foundation and guiding principles concerning making decisions, actions and creates a sense of community. It is associated with the personal values of employees and the organization's values, which result in a unified and highly motivated staff. The management and top leaders set examples and live by them as an example to their staff that follows suit. Such systems are flexible and stable over time and are characterized by increased productivity and staff commitment, especially if they are strong and stable.

A value-based culture brings out the organization's identity through its core principles, beliefs, and values, which normally shape its culture and support its vision. Core values are not universal, and an organization must select the principles it holds most important as this has a direct reflection on its identity. Culture defines how individuals and groups behave, which brings out the close relation between the two, values and culture (Cohen & Ehrlich, 2019). Project Renewal organization provides one of the best examples as it promotes behaviors, policies, and attitudes that enables working in cross-cultural situations with clients, co-workers, and community partners.

Project Renewal Organization

Project Renewal Organization has been in operation since 1967, pioneering social innovation that supports the most vulnerable New Yorkers and has been developing more and better-integrated programs and services over the years. The organization has been in operation for over 50 years and was first called Manhattan Bowery Corporation. The first successful treatment program was an alcohol detoxification program located at the Third Street Men's shelter, and today, the organization is still pioneering as leaders in the provision of healthcare, homes, and jobs for homeless adults by meeting them where they are and trying to find a solution to their needs.

Project Renewal's mission deals with bringing to end homelessness and its cycle by supporting individuals and families to renew and rebuild their lives with the provision of healthcare, homes, and employment opportunities. The organization serves homeless adults who are struggling with substance abuse and mental illness or a combination of both, through innovative programs that are uniquely comprehensive and integrated and designed to bring their problems to an end. These projects are replicated all over the nation and help 15,000 and more homeless adults every year. It brings with it renewed hope for those societies had given up on as they strive to achieve positive results and do not give up easily.

The organization has a board of trustees, management team, the junior board that ensures the smooth running of day-to-day activities, program formulation and implementation, finance, and administration functions of the organization, among others. They have various departments that deal with various functions in healthcare, home provision, and employment. The top management is responsible for decision-making as it is centralized and hierarchical in the process. The workforce is diverse as they handle different issues in society and different fields such as medicine, architecture, management, finance, and other specialized areas of operation. Some of their employees were previously clients who have completed the full rehabilitation process or from similar situations in other centers.

Social innovations are categorized into three; health, homes, and jobs. In health, they are pioneers in healthcare and use vans, qualified mental health workers, psychiatrists, doctors, and other medical officers to offer holistic treatments that incorporate primary healthcare, addiction treatment, and mental health services. Homes are designed by experts by creating sustainable spaces and services in ending homelessness through the use of architectural designs. They also provide homes to those stigmatized due to mental illness or drug abuse, as well as those that need accommodation with facilities to enhance their stay. When it comes to jobs, they help provide employment through the use of social enterprises, job training, and placements. This includes ensuring they match the needs of those seeking employment to their desired jobs and also ensure they stay employed. They also assist those facing job challenges by offering counseling as well as needs for those starting jobs but lack means of carrying through like transport and meals to help them remain employed.

Project renewal organization fosters corporate social responsibility by their accountability and transparency as they have online publications that show their efficiency, sustainability, and trust. By showing how donations are used wisely and collaborating with a variety of partners, they can secure funding and achieve their goals. Partners include private individuals, corporations, public funders at state and city level, and foundations. Supplement revenue also comes from social enterprises, and housing programs generate rental income. Their financial documents are audited by independent auditors every year, and they provide proof of the financial summary and how far they have achieved their mission, among others, to build trust with stakeholders and community partners.

Management in the Non-profit Organization

Management in the non-profit organization involves tasks and chores that must be performed for the effective and smooth running of the organization. The main functions of management are leading, planning, organizing and controlling functions of the organization for smooth running of day-to-day activities. Planning in non-profit organizations is important also as it involves long-term and short-term strategies that help meet goals, deal with stakeholders, and enhance goodwill in the community. Planning helps improve performance, further the organization's mission statement and get more funding. Managers who plan well act as an example to fellow employees by encouraging hard work, a good attitude and setting personal work-related values. Excellent planners are also great at organizing. Plans have to be laid in a logical and consistent manner by deciding on critical issues, delegating important tasks and setting up a hierarchy of jobs within the organization by the management. Proper organization results in positive outcomes within the organization and to other stakeholders and community partners.

Managers are leaders and therefore must possess leadership skills, motivate their employees, connect with stakeholder as well as representing the organization's mission statement well. Control is about monitoring the progress of the organization towards its goals and responding to issues and situations as they arise. Managers should not use force and other forms of aggression that can be detrimental in the successful running of the organization hinder staff progress. Managers in the non-profit organization have the task of planning and coordinating outreach campaigns, event organization, creation of fundraising initiatives, and also public relations. They play a significant role in building membership and connecting new donors to the organization as well as raising awareness of the non-profit organization offers

The Organization's Structure

Structural scopes in an organization comprise of hierarchy, specialization, centralization, formalization, and complexity. The structure of an organizations help define its effectiveness, efficiency and approach to stakeholders, both internal and external. Most non-profit organizations are still imprinted with the hierarchical, formalized mechanistic approach, which implies that they have a centralized structure, apply vertical communication, have strict hierarchical authority, and have specialized tasks and many rules (Butler, 2016). In a vertical structure specialization is applied in that employees work in areas of their specialization, and the emphasis is put on standardization of the process relating to the specific jobs in the organization.

The organization also follows a specialized strategy by focusing on a specified service for a specific community like in Project Renewal, which serves the New York community in dealing with homelessness and other areas associated with it. Its resources are invested in related services within its core mission of dealing with homelessness, which includes health and employment.

Hierarchy

Non-profit organizations are hierarchal and have a board of directors who are responsible for the organization. The organizational structure consists of a board of directors and executives, managers and administration staff. Each have their own roles and responsibilities and are required to observe the principles, beliefs and values, and further the set mission. The Board of Directors has the primary responsibility of running the non-profit organization as it sets rules and regulations that govern it, oversees financial and strategic plans, and hire/fire executive staff. The members usually receive no compensation but volunteer their services as they are experts in various fields such as law, economics, accounting and so forth. The function in other areas such as staffing and organizational program changes and through meetings, address concerns and upcoming events in the organization (Driskill, 2018). Examples of positions at the board level include chairman, vice chairman/president, treasurer and secretary.

The organization structure is the heart of the Project Renewal organization. It constitutes the board of directors, executive, managerial, and administrative positions. The board of directors is accountable for running the non-profit organization. The set the rules and regulations, hire the services of the executive staff, and oversee the strategic plans. The members of the board of directors are simply volunteers who receive compensation. They are always recruited due to their expertise in particular areas including accounting and law. They attend meetings frequently to discuss any prompt concerts, upcoming events, and changes in programs.

Executive staff are responsible for the daily running of a non-profit organization as well as representing the organization at external events and programs. They oversee the lower-level staff position and report to the board of directors. Examples include the CEO, vice presidents, and chief officers. Key official staff positions incorporate the president or CEO, VP, and other boss officials relying upon the size of the association. They are managed by the top managerial staff and administer lower-level staff positions. Ordinarily, the president and other executive staff are the core of the Project Renewal. They talk on outside occasions and meet with potential benefactors to make sure about cash for their association.

The managerial staff handle many operations and work closely with clients. They plan events and develop new programs. Such positions include human resources managers, program managers, among others. The administrative staff roles are usually at the entry-level, and they assist the manager and executives with daily office routines such as carrying out duties in the office, answering the phone and emails, scheduling appointments, and many others. Such positions include office assistants, secretaries, and other administrative officers and staff.
