Through colleges and universities, individuals access the gateway to power, which significantly affects the levels of economic and social life that people live. In maintaining the well-being of the society, these institutions have the moral obligations of nurturing the talents of the learners who come out as the best product for the productivity of the nations. However, the ability of the colleges and institutions to produce all-round individuals after the training requires a useful framework based on ethical decision-making. From the survey, the report presents various perceptions and issues that associate with ethical decision-making in higher education and how they influence the choices that the organizations make in the achievement of their objectives.
Perceptions and Issues Relating to Ethical Decision-Making in Higher Education
Ethics requires the institutions of higher learning to equip students to be ethical actors within the workplaces they may occupy in the future (Bell, 2017). The graduates from the universities and colleges should further advocate for ethical practices both inside and outside the academic settings while applying the concepts learned during their studies. Some graduate schools offer compulsory professional development while others focus on offering optional related development courses for their students. Hence, they create a bigger picture of analyzing ethical conflicts in the diversified business environment, enabling them to consider ethical practices despite the influence of many factors surrounding them.
Standard ethical decision-making is an accepted concept in all the higher learning institutions. According to Chmielewski (2014), ethical standards are what the majority of the institution consider as favorable, and as it also influences the students' behavior without necessarily imposing rules and other restrictions on them. Hence, when students work so closely, they may develop some perceptions that influence the core value of their projects. When making ethical decisions in the organization, issues such as conflicts of interest may arise. Higher institutions consist of an amalgamation of different people with divergent views. Each member within the institution expresses their wishes according to their interests, hence, creating an opposition to the suggestions by others which might be for the common good of the universities. Hence, the situation of conflicting interest present challenges to the institution managers whose purpose is to morally serve the interest of the organization using his best conscience.
The determination of morally permissible acts within the universities and colleges is yet another challenge that affects their ethical decision making. There exists a difference in opinion among the various departments leading to the division of members along the lines of determining right and bad Chmielewski, (2014). Arguably, there are multiple scenes of good and evil existing side by side within the learning institutions. Hence, an individual may suggest a method that leads to the failure of systems within an organization while the same system enhances success in the same organization but a different department.
Ethical standpoints in the Universities and colleges may lead criticism among the members since they create the opposite of the situation based on their varying sets of approaches to issues. Such groups of members within the colleges may make unethical arguments that seek to justify their false intentions of compromising ethical practices in the organization. For instance, an environmental club within the university may criticize the activities of another department based on environmental pollution. However, based on the determination, the group executing this activity, may justify its practices by arguing that they intend to benefit the needy section of the institution. They are hence derailing the achievement of a competent, ethical decision making.
Recommendations for Addressing the Issues
The management of the universities and colleges should adopt the disclosure method solving conflicts of interest in the organization. Whether mandatory or periodic the institutions should ensure that it considers virtually all the idea and suggestions by the members before making the final decision. Further, the management should consider the endorsement of critical measures that helps in coping up with conflicts of interest arising from the divergent opinion of the members ("Managing Conflict of Interest," 2019). In this respect, the management of the institutions of higher learning should also focus on hosting seminars and workshops that will educate the members of staff on how to agree and disagree with others while making a crucial decision in the organization.
It is also a common requirement that the universities and colleges seek the best ways of motivating the employees in making an ethical decision for the benefit of the organization. The institutions should look for ways of improving the interactions among the staff members, which will acknowledge them as essential resources in the success of the organization. Based on this concept, the colleges will, therefore, adopt measures that create harmony and unity among the various departmental heads, subjecting them to a uniform decision making. In this view, the various groups within the universities will experience minimal differences among them, therefore, reducing challenges to decision-making processes (Chao, 2015). Thus, based on this survey, ethical decision making is an integral part of the institution's success, and therefore, the universities and colleges should develop ways of improving this practice.
