Introduction
Through its power and leadership structure, the United Arab Emirates has focused and invested heavily in social and economic development over the years. As such, the UAE has experienced steady growth in its diverse sectors, thus facilitating the execution and delivery of services to its citizens. In the UAE, the health sector holds a central role in ensuring that the country's workforce remains fit and healthy to promote the region's overall economic growth through their active involvement in their daily activities. To facilitate the execution of health services, the region's government has increased the number of hospitals in the past five years. Typically, the growth aspect in the number of hospitals in the region implies that there is an increased demand for medical practitioners. Considering the demand for better health practices in the UAE, the government has committed to offering a suitable and favourable work environment for the medics while constantly motivating them through a modest lifestyle. More importantly, the government and other stakeholders should commit to ensuring that health workers are happy at all times, considering its effectiveness in promoting level of service delivery and patient satisfaction.
Typically, scientists and researchers acknowledge happiness as the primary stimulus for human purpose (Rahighee, 2015). Unlike the popular perception, scientists claim that happiness is not the opposite of depression or even the lack of it. Instead, the lack of depression is a positive trait to attaining happiness (Rahighee, 2015). In most fields, happiness is of the essence, particularly because it aids in the attainment of a state that is characterized by contentment and enjoyment, all of which are critical to the achievement of positive results and consumer satisfaction. In addition, a workforce that is happy experiences reduced occupational burnouts, they are less emotional, and more importantly, they are less likely to be absent at their respective work station or, in the worst case, quit their job. Therefore, with the rapid spread of the Coronavirus in most, if not all, parts of the world, including in the United Arab Emirates, health practitioners need to be happy to facilitate the execution and delivery of services.
In the past few months, the global social and economic activities have been brought to a standstill by the highly infectious novel Corona Virus. Unlike other sectors of the economy, the health sector continues to function to accommodate victims of the deadly virus while establishing the appropriate measures and medications for the patients. In other terms, this research focuses on the health practitioner while justifying the importance of their happiness in these trying Corona times. Typically, considering the adversities of the novel Coronavirus and its highly infectious rate, medics need to be in the right mental and physical state. The health practitioners' mental health and fitness is critical in these trying times since it helps in making informed and sound decisions, thus establishing effective ways of handling patients.
Some of the medics 'mental and physical needs include their protection, including that of their families. An elaborate security and protection system would relieve them of their mental struggles that could result from exposing their families to the highly contagious disease. Also, considering the overwhelming number of patients, hospital facilities, and equipment have been stretched to the limit. Medics are also required to work for long hours to contain the situation by meeting the patients' needs. As such, medics need to have peace of mind by knowing that they are well guarded and protected so that they do not expose their families to the deadly disease. Further, owing to the long working hours, medics need to have the right diet and rest to minimize cases of occupational burnouts that could compromise the execution of services.
Typically, this initiative is based on the psychological ideology that happiness is a central stimulus for human purpose. In addition, happiness holds a critical role in promoting environment stability, thus reducing tension amongst the organization's workforce. With low tension, employees and, in this case, medic, are motivated to work since they have a profound emotional balance, and a positive concept that grant and facilitate their mental and physical well-being. In other terms, this essay focuses on creating a happiness initiative that will help medics in the United Arab Emirates execute their roles and duties amidst the novel Coronavirus pandemic period.
Initiative
Goal and Objectives
Considering the spread of the novel Coronavirus to the various parts of the world and the increased risks and mortality rates, this initiative intends to motivate the United Arab Emirates' health practitioners by making them happy, thus positively influencing the execution of services. The primary goal of this initiative is, therefore, to ensure that it addresses the mental and physical needs of the health practitioners to ensure that they are fit to handle, diagnose, and treat the wide pool of patients in these difficult times. Also, this initiative intends to psychologically prepare the medics about the change of the usual routines and procedures, particularly because of the stretched medical equipment and the overwhelming number of patients. Ultimately, this initiative intends to acknowledge the critical role medics play in ensuring that the United Arab Emirates populace is safe and healthy while demonstrating the importance of mental and physical fitness in the medical sector.
Goal and Objective statement
The primary goal of this initiative is to demonstrate the importance of happiness in corona times through a psychological approach. On the other hand, the primary objective of this initiative is to:
Ensure that medics in the United Arab Emirates are mentally and physically fit during these Corona times
Ensure that medics in the UAE are not emotional and are committed to their roles and work in their respective medical facilities
Ensure that medics in the UAE embrace and practice interpersonal communication, which is critical to sharing ideas, thus positively influencing the decision-making process
Ensure that medics in the UAE are motivated to work the spread of a highly contagious disease notwithstanding
Ensure that medics in the United Arab Emirates have a positive mind-set, positive self-concept, and an emotional balance all of which are vital for the increased productivity despite the risk and occupational stressors
Ultimately, this initiative hopes to facilitate the fight against the novel Coronavirus by uniting the medical fraternity, which is at the heart of saving the affected entities
Description of the Initiative
The effectiveness and success of an organization are determined by the integration and cooperation of the various stakeholders, including the management and its diverse workforce. Through an integrated organizational system, employees work as a unit, thus positively influencing the production process while actualizing the organization's vision, mission, and core objectives. A firm should also have a profound culture that guides the functions of the organization while reflecting its values and beliefs. The United Arab Emirates is known for many things, including its rich Arabic culture that governs the social, economic, and political scopes. In other terms, organizational functions and human behaviors in the UAE are tailored to the Arabic culture, which most often than not limits the interactions of those who live or even visit the place. Typically, owing to the rapid growth of the United Arab Emirates, the government has heavily invested in the health sector. To complement the rapid growth and technological advancements, the government has also, in the recent past, used hired medical services from other developed nations such as Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Considering the local and international health practitioners' conflicting culture, the health sector needs an initiative that unites the diverse cultures while motivating them to work towards a common goal, especially during these corona times.
The proposed initiative seeks to promote the medics' happiness through recreational centres in the distinct medical facilities across the vast United Arab Emirates. The recreational centres will be equipped with gym facilities, dance centres, massage centre, and laundry sections. Also, the proposed initiative seeks to have a common kitchen and dining area where medics will meet to share their meals at the end of every shift. Typically, to actualize this plan, the government, through the distinct medical facilities, needs to coordinate the functions of the health sector to ensure that health practitioners are mentally and physically fit and, more importantly, happy in their quest to contain the highly contagious novel coronavirus.
Resources needed and Challenges Related to Psychology and Mental Behaviour
To actualize the proposed initiative, the following resources are required:
- Gym equipment
- Quality sound systems
- Washing machines
- Masseuse
- Kitchen equipment
- Spacious rooms for the proposed activities
The health sector is a sensitive field that requires professionalism and work ethics to facilitate the execution of services. Also, the health sector is categorized as one of the overwhelming fields, and as such medical practitioners are constantly under pressure to be productive, considering that the lives of their clients depend on their efficiency, among other factors. In other words, due to the constant occupational pressure, the medics' mental health is at risk. Some of the challenges expressed by compromised psychology and mental behaviours include being unproductive, occupational burnouts, absenteeism, depression, emotional imbalance, and a negative self-concept. As such, health practitioners in the UAE cannot adequately handle the pressure and risks resulting from the novel Coronavirus hence the need for the happiness initiative
Timeline Proposal
Considering the fact that the proposed happiness plan is specifically developed to ensure that the United Arab Emirates' health practitioners are happy and mentally and physically fit during these overwhelming Corona times, the plan should take a few weeks to actualize. At most, the plan should take six weeks to be fully functional. While the plan is specifically set to facilitate the fight against the novel Coronavirus, the plan remains useful also to facilitate the execution of the normal functions of the medical facilities in the UAE.
Discussion
The proposed happiness initiative is developed to positively influence the execution and delivery of healthcare services in the UAE, specifically by ensuring that medics are happy and in the right mental and physical state. Therefore, the effectiveness of the proposed plan can only be assessed and evaluated based on the overall outcome as expressed by medics in handling corona cases, among other conditions in the UAE. Also, the effectiveness of the proposed happiness initiative will be assessed and evaluated based on the PERMA psychological model that is used to establish and structure profound ways of pursuing happiness in an organizational setup.
In the positive psychological model, Martin Seligman claims that PERMA acts as an effective tool that organizations and individuals can use to pursue happiness. The acronym stands for positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishments (Pascha, 2020). The proposed plan should, therefore, have the capacity to ensure that health practitioners have positive and balanced emotions in their respective work stations. In addition, the proposed plan should...
