Introduction
A mass shooting is very common amongst students in schools. Parents have hope that the use of law enforcement tactics would help them secure their children from that problem. In this article, the author provided his view on the mass shooting in schools and how parents and learning institutions are struggling to overcome it. In this article, the author opens the stage by providing the description of what happens in school regarding the mass shooting and the steps that the school administrators have taken to prevent a mass shooting. The author then explains how several attempts have been made to ensure that students are safe in school. He also introduces approaches that the school administrators have employed to secure children against mass shooting such as hardening and adding more police officers in schools.
The author also continues to explore how parents are taking little action towards the safety of their children without using law enforcement tactics (Keels, 2018). As a result, the praise for securing children against mass shooting in schools goes to school administrators but not parents. Although other researchers suggest that hardening and employment of other law enforcement agencies such as police may not work, the author advice for the use of other tactics that would provide positive results that which is currently being applied in schools. As suggested by the author, parents play an insignificant role towards the prevention of mass shooting because they have a higher expectation from the school administrators. The author believed that the involvement of police officers increases fear and anxiety among the students and parents and therefore it is important to explore other strategies against mass shooting.
In the entire work of this author, there are very many sources that support the credibility of ethos and also enhancing his argument. Sources such as Dewey Cornell who believed that the police would punish the student for saying something stupid instead of counseling the student as a counselor would do. The provision of these sources is important in enhancing the credibility of the author by showing who has done the work. It also provides facts and expert opinion to support his suggestion and idea.
In addition, the author also gave example to illustrate his idea and opinion to disown the use of hardening to highlight that he has experienced such cases in different occasions. When giving more information about his ethos appeals, the author uses logos that have factual information that acts as evidence of what usually happens in schools when there is violence (Keels, 2018). The author points out his own life when his son was in school and the police officers were deployed to deal with the situation. He explained that he could not sleep and keep on calling his son to know his condition. The introduction of these facts acted as evidence that hardening is not the best tactic to use when there is school violence. The author could not stop at that point but introduced other tactics that can be used in solving school violence.
Furthermore the author also makes proper use of pathos in the entire article especially in the middle and at the beginning. At the beginning of the article, there are emotionally charged words that are able to reveal sympathetic images. The author realizes that law enforcement tactics could not work and it is important to explore other strategies. The author is facing serious vulnerability and challenges of being in a position to help his son when there is a mass shooting. He wants the readers to sympathize with the students and parents when there is a mass shooting in their school (Keels, 2018). There are other words and phrases that the author used to express his emotions and inner feelings when talking to his son during violence such phrases include I, too.
Conclusion
The author begins the article by making persuasions to the readers to take care of their children when there is violence in school. The author could not strongly bring out his argument because he has undergone such problems and understands what happens in such cases. He, therefore, can drive his points effectively on what parents and children go through when hardening tactic is not changed.
