The terms texting and driving are not new among scholars and the public in general. Texting is the act of using a mobile phone to send a message. The message may be intended for a colleague, a friend or even sometimes parents. Driving, on the other hand, is a bit obvious. It is the act of controlling a vehicle. Both activities can never be done simultaneously. One has to take place at a time. Multitasking of the two has untold consequences. The only way to curb the menace is by coming up with regulations that make the act of texting and driving illegal. One of the reasons for making it illegal is that it is a big contributor to the ever-rising number of accidents. This is due to altered concentration while driving. Secondly, it is a way of enhancing accountability as well as preventing the spread of the behavior to younger generations. On the other hand, accidents were occurring even before the discovery of mobile phones. It is for this reason that the regulations may not make any sense.

Apart from drink driving, use of mobile phones while driving is a leading cause of accidents. It is very difficult for an individual to text and drives appropriately. Texting particularly calls for some reasonable concentration. While on the wheel, keeping an eye on the phone is a big risk. Though unquoted, a large percentage of the accidents are as a result of reckless driving. Drivers have their heads and eyes on the phones other than fully concentrating on the roads. These drivers eventually end up crashing other vehicles or even landing into ditches. Others end up smashing walls and road grills. Other forms of accidents may be running over or hitting of the pedestrians crossing the roads at designated crossing points. As other forms of reckless driving are being addressed, more emphasis has to be put on this. The youth and other in-experienced drivers have fallen culprits to the menace. Accidents are never discriminative. Only those on the wrong side of the traffic rules suffer. Innocent individuals may as well suffer due to the negligence of traffic rules by the drivers. There is, therefore, need for coming up with laws to make text driving illegal. Coming up with the laws has however proved futile owing to the dynamics involved.

Secondly, children learn the habit of texting and driving from their parents. Some individuals particularly parents purport to be driving experts simply because they text and drive and have never caused an accident. In such scenarios, there is a high probability of the children picking up some of the habits of their parents in future. Parents are meant to be role models for their kids. It is unfortunate that the parents will go ahead and send messages while driving as their children watch. In case there exist laws that govern the use of mobile phones on roads, there can be a chance for the future generations to learn such bad behaviors. Perhaps the law enforcers have been patient to check whether common sense can apply. In this case, common sense has failed terribly and thus there is the urgent need for safety measures to be put in place. That way, the younger generation will have nowhere to read the bad traits.

In as much as there is much debate on the use of mobile phones while driving, people should get to understand that vehicles existed long before phones were discovered. Surprisingly, there occurred several accidents at the time yet they were usually not on phones. It is very much worrying that reckless driving is being singled out on use of mobile phones. The act of texting particularly seems to attract more attention. Texting while driving is unethical but at the same time should not be demonized alone. Other important aspects that encompass road safety have to be brought into records as well. Similarly, some calls and messages are hard to ignore. Lets' take, for example, a friend calls and there are in great in need of help. Between answering and ignoring which has a greater ethical perspective.

Texting and driving is a dangerous combination of events. There is a high risk of accidents resulting due to the lack of concentration. While on the wheel, one has to ensure maximum concentration. A divided mind is likely to bring about recklessness. Parents should as well serve as role models to their kids by not handling phones while driving. The attention should not be directed to the use of phones alone. Other measures outside the use of phones have to be put into consideration. Nevertheless, much haste has to be directed to the eradication of the use of phones while driving. Many controversies have surrounded the development of the related laws. The best way is to come up with regulations that will see those who break the laws punished by the law. Punishing one can serve as an example to the rest. Consequently, huge fines have to be imposed on those caught going against the law. Before coming up with these regulations, it is necessary to engage the public in checking on their views. Additionally, the public has to be educated on what the law requires of them before subjecting them to punishment. The regulations should cover all areas that are a risk to the road safety.
