When it comes to teaching, the style and mode of delivery are very important. It will determine if students will understand anything by the end of the lesson. Right from the introduction, it is very important to follow all the necessary steps in teaching so that majority of students can be able to tell what was learned by the end of the lesson. It also good to give a preview of what the topic is about before starting teaching and raising the main ideas on the topic. If possible, it would also be very helpful to try and relate the topic to personal experiences of the students and also give them a few minutes to discuss among themselves.
Using the article, 'Put Down that Glass: Airlines cracking down on drunk passengers with lifetime bans,' while teaching a few pre-teaching steps would be followed. First, you will have to identify the essential vocabularies in the article. The main vocabularies that can even read from the topic include; airlines, drinking, passengers, travel and, ban. Taking a quick review of the words would be helpful to the students. You may consider giving definitions of the words or looking at the different concepts in which the words may occur. This can be done by either asking the students randomly or even having them to discuss among themselves. The preview will help in comprehension. However, this will all be determined by the level of the learners and the past experience with them. The five words covering the topic of discussion, it would also be necessary for the students to brainstorm and give their views on what they think for example on the issues of alcoholism while travelling. These words will bring a very clear picture of what the article is about even before reading.
The next major important thing to do is to develop the main idea of the topic. This is done by generalizing what the topic is all about in just a few words. This way you will move together in the discussion. The main idea can easily be drawn from the topic without necessarily having to go into details. In the article being discussed the main idea from the topic is about alcohol and travel. From this, many questions may be drawn and even some can be directed to the learners. Some articles are quite small and not all details be captured and this offers a room for the learners to add up to what has been already said. Small articles will also take a few minutes to read therefore while teaching, you may consider giving them a specific amount of time to read and come up with the answers to the formulated questions. This way, they will be more attentive while in class. As a teacher, there are specific things that you will expect the students to deliver while responding to the questions. If a question like why consumption of alcohol before a flight could be harmful is raised, then you will expect answers ranging from psychological effects or even social effects.
After the formulation of the main idea, it would be time to read in details. This will now help in better comprehension of what has been said. Detailed reading can simply be put as the supporting information to the topic or proof of what the topic is all about. That is the reason why it is always important for a writer to make sure that the topic will always be drawn from the content. The teacher may decide to read through the content aloud to the students while offering short explanations for the sake of those students who may not understand. But to make the class more engaging, it would be preferable to direct some parts to students to give their own explanations to the class aloud. This way a teacher will quickly identify weaknesses they may be facing.
The next major step would be to test comprehension of the topic by the students. This is necessary because after all that would be the essence of teaching if no one understands what has been taught. There are various ways in which you can test if the students understood the topic. These include randomly asking questions on any area of the topic covered and directing them to any student. The most effective strategy would be setting question a quiz and giving the students to complete the answers. This way a teacher is able to identify individual weaknesses of each student. Sometimes a teacher will even put multiple choices on the questions making it even easier for the students. However, sometimes it would be better if there are no multiple choices so as to let the students express their thoughts and ideas in the work. They may be short answer questions or even those requiring long explanations. This may be sometimes determined by the duration of the lesson or the scheduled amount of time for the examination. Multiple-choice questions sometimes give a better chance to the weaker students to perform better. A teacher may however, tend to believe that setting questions that require quite an explanation is better. This will make the students read deeper on the topic so they won't run short of words while responding to the questions.
When done with the examination, it would be necessary to give the students a chance to give their reactions on the topic. Some of them may even have seen or experienced what was being discussed. You may find that a few students may have travelled in the same plane with a drunken individual and therefore such a platform would give them a chance to narrate how the journey was. This way, other students will be able to relate what was being learnt to a real-life experience. This makes learning easier and fun. A teacher may not be directly involved in this but rather can group the students and let them give their views on the topic to each other, then one person can present to the whole class later.
The way a teacher teaches will always determine if the students will learn anything at the end, that's why it is necessary to try and employ the best skills and methods while teaching, for the benefit of the student.
