Introduction
In an article titled, "3 Simple Habits to Improve Your Critical Thinking" by Hellen Lee Bouygues, published on May 06, 2019, entails the significance of critical thinking. As a business consultant, the author mentions that different struggling organizations have reached out to her for guidance on strategies to sort out their issues to head in the right direction. Bouygues believes that all the organization challenges share a similar root issue: A lack of critical thinking. Many business leaders jump to the initial conclusion, whatever the evidence, without analyzing the pressing issues and evaluating challenges in different dimensions. In that perspective, the author has elaborated on three critical areas that people must concentrate on to enhance their critical thinking skills.
Three Important Aspects of Critical Thinking
The three significant aspects of critical thinking to Bouygues include:
Question Assumption
Bouygues asserts that it is essential for business leaders to start questioning their organization's assumptions. The question assumption element critically boosts a leader's formulation skills because they can determine whether the assumption made is relevant for clients (Bouygues). The author illustrates a struggling organization that presumed that all their clients had disposable income and thus could afford their overpriced attires. Bouygues believes that the organization would have made tremendous profits if it had sold the shirts and pants at affordable prices. However, one needs to figure out the appropriate time to question assumptions. For example, in a discussion regarding long-term company approaches, it is critical to ask fundamental questions such as How will I know that the business will attain its annual objectives? Based on my test on "How Good is Your Problem Solving," It is evident that I have good questioning assumption skills since I scored 8 out of 10 in finding the fact aspect, and 7 out of 10 in finding ideas. Nonetheless, I need to improve on finding the problem element that I scored 4 out of 10 to enhance my questioning assumptions and, subsequently, my critical thinking skills.
Reasoning through Logic
Bouygues asserts that organizations must reason through logic by giving an example of a large lingerie company that had one of its product lines declining annually. She believes that the significant ways that the organization believed that all global consumers had similar lingerie preferences. Therefore, the lingerie organization made repeated mistakes of shipping out similar brassieres to every unit store in Europe (Bouygues). Nonetheless, the lingerie organization enhanced its logical reasoning, which dramatically increased its bottom line. Based on my test on "How Good is Your Problem Solving," I have recommendable ratings in selecting, evaluating, and selling ideas since I got 9 out of 10. However, I would have experienced similar challenges to the Lingerie company shareholders since I am deficient in finding out the problem as I got 4 out of 10 in the segment. From that perspective, I need to enhance my finding of the problem attribute to improve my logical reasoning skills.
Seeking out Diversity of Thought and Collaboration
Bouygues believes that people face the challenge of associating with people with whom they share the same cliché- be it age, religion, or politics. Nonetheless, the author believes that it is essential for people to solicit different viewpoints by associating with people of different backgrounds and life experiences (Bouygues). Seeking out diversity of thought and collaboration helps one opinionate independently without the influence of a particular cultural or group cliché. Based on my test on "How Good is Your Problem Solving," I scored moderately in generating potential solutions (7 out of 15) and a positive decision-making environment (11 out of 20). As mentioned earlier, I should improve on the areas to seek out diversity of collaboration and perception that would eventually increase my critical thinking.
