'Theme for English B' is a poem narrated by Langston Hughes to elaborate more on a conflict between a white professor and an African-American student. Written in 1949, the theme of racism applied is still seen in our societies not only because of the skin color, but also various factors. Hughes wrote the poem to show what inspired between two people of different races. This poem will, therefore, elaborate more on conflicts between people and society and why it's still a problem all over the world by using Langston Hughes' poem, the 'Theme for English B.'
First, racism is still a big deal in our society. The term racism means discrimination, antagonism, and prejudice against an individual of a different race based on the aspect that their race is superior to the other. We think that African-Americans would not suffer from racism, but the truth is that they still hurt a lot. People have their own experiences from what they believe is right, what they were taught is right, and this becomes difficult to change someone's mindset. One question that we should be asking is why a skin color makes us different? The society has been sick for decades, and we need to speak out for those that suffer and feel less important. An excellent example of this scenario is seen in the poem when the author stated that "Go home, write a page, and when the page comes out of you, then the information you gave is true," (Hughes n.p). It is something right just because we believe in it? Look to our society, and we can see that is not true. It is not easy for people to find themselves and their emotions with so many judgments.
Citizenship is another controversial issue that is seen in our society. We all know that a person from America, Europe, and Canada think they are better than the rest of the world, but is this possible? We see on the news all the time on how they "build the wall," to send the immigrants back home" and I wonder about how much a life is worth for someone that is not from the first world Countries. More contrary, Hughes also talked about citizenship in the poem when he stated that "being me does not me I should be white, but I will be part of your life," (Hughes n.p). This part shows us that we are all part of each other and we need each other to survive. It is impossible to separate who is better than the other. It is a big community, and every single person is worth and essential in the world.
Furthermore, a class is another significant conflict inside our society since we have so many differences between people that have money and people that do not have money. People with money and more opportunities usually believe that they are better than people with low income. If we combine skin color, citizen and low income it is clear that the society neglects these people. How can people with fewer opportunities succeed in a community that is so judgmental and always think they are not good enough? This is also seen in Hughes poem when he wrote that "perhaps you don't want to be part of my life neither do I want to be part of you/ but the truth is that we are together. This makes us learn from each other," (Hughes n.p). This means that when a person is rejected because of their differences, they tend to react back. The same negative reaction is seen in Hughes statement.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the conflicts in our society are incredibly unfair and need to be speaker out if we want to have new generations with more acceptance and less judgment. People need to understand that not only we are all the same but also, we can learn with each person, culture and differences. All these conflicts can be solved with education and put ourselves as humans in others place. All lives are worth it and should be appreciated inside society.
