Introduction
Technological advancement has been the most significant invention by humankind in history. In the military and civil engineering, machines and other applications have been introduced to make work and the world, in general, a more accessible place. Besides the military advancement in engineering, there has also been technological advancement in civil engineering. The paper will focus on the novel idea of the use of drones and how they are utilized in disaster control and management. Drones came as advancement in airplane technology. They were first invented in 1902, and they came as advancement and a replacement to the air balloons which were not controlled from the inside and were used by the Austrian to attack the Venice. Drones have thus emerged from the military capacity to commercial usage where they are used to record data and information. Government and individuals use them to offer surveillance to disaster-stricken areas and in the management of such situations. The paper will also focus on 3-D Numerical modeling in the field of civil engineering as this is another form of technological advancement that came as a game changer in the civil engineering sector. Because of the failure of the air balloons which flew back to blow the Austrian flights, there becomes the need for further advancement in drones that would be more effective (Bartsch, Coyne, & Gray, 2016).
Besides the use of drones in the military sector, they can also be used in the agricultural industry to monitor disaster-stricken areas and in data collection to enhance operations. The drones have mostly been used in the countries that are most affected by climate adversities and change which has led to the death of many people in such countries. The drones are used to collect useful and critical data to help the disaster management team to access the levels of damage in the area and improvise methods of tackling the problem at hand. In the agricultural field, drones are utilized to provide the information that the agriculturalist would see in the pre and post planning in the area. This kind of drones though they are a bit expensive compared to the older generation of drones, they are more effective and lasts longer to the older versions. (Wolf, 2017).
Drones and the 3-D Numerical technology have emerged as the ordinary means for environmentalist and wildlife conservers in the monitoring of their forestation and in assessing the infrastructure projects that can be used in the enhancement of the vegetation. The drones mostly monitor the projects in the coastal regions and the underdeveloped areas. The drones are used to survey over them and help in gathering useful data on the situation and thus make it easier for the officers to devise more reliable strategies that would be used in either advancing the location or better conservation of such vegetation. By taking important data and information relating to the environment, drones have helped disaster-stricken areas by assisting the environmentalists in coming up with reliable information which they use to predict the possible future occurrence and thus help prevent any catastrophe that might have happened had not been for the data provided by the drones (Tanzi, et al. 2016)
Public service officers are always in need of improving their service providence. The invention of drones came as the game changer and the best technological advancement in delivering their duties. The mobile controlled drones are used by the officials to help gather information which would later be used in coming up with more reliable means of providing safety to the public. Technological advancement, especially for the drones, has enhanced the safety delivery operations since it is now easier to track and assemble the needed information for any study and strategic analysis. The drones are flown using remotes installed with them sensors that detect the area under investigation taking pictures and records the related information needed. Drone technology is the greatest of the technological advancement in the civil engineering sector; have helped develop more efficient and safe environments for the public. (Restas, 2015).
In the occurrence of nuclear or deployment of hazardous materials, drones have become useful in taking in the extent to which the elements have gone and the length to which the accident has covered. The drones take images of the disaster which are analyzed and help in advising the people who might be in the neighboring areas. Drones have been useful in such hazardous accidents which if not controlled would lead to very severe complications such as loss of lives and even destruction of the vegetation and environment around them. In the case of nuclear accidents, there are certain dangers that such disaster poses such as radioactivity which spreads so fast. Since radiation cannot be monitored individually by any person, drones have thus become the only means to which the spread of energy and its effects can be recorded, and such accidents covered without having to put any person at risk. The drones are remotely controlled and fly above the incident area capturing the distance of the radiations and the spread of the nuclear accident (Restas, 2015). Such information can then be spread to the population advising them on the possible extent to which the disaster has gone. The drones help in such hazard affected areas, and they have been much helpful in reducing damage and in preventing any further dangers to the population.
Floods have become another form of disaster the leads to massive destruction of vegetation especially for the farmers whose crops go into waste because of floods. Floods came to be very hazardous as they spread very fast and can even lead to the destruction of the set dams and other projects in the affected location. Drones thus have come as the only means to monitor the floods and record through mappings on the state of the state dams and the projects on land that may have been in place. Understanding the state of the barriers and the country at which they are at the time of the floods is very useful for the government to ascertain their nature at that time of the incident. During the waves too, people trapped in the event may lack any rooftop or any building to rest at, but the drones can be used to locate those in the drones where motorboats can be used by the saviors to rescues the trapped. Drones have enhanced and lead to efficiency in the event of disasters such as flooding as it has made it easier for the location of the victims in the water and thus their easy lifting from the floods. 3-D Numerical technology has also been a significant advancement in the civil engineering sector as they enable the taking of images which are very useful in the evaluation of the state of the environment in the most effective way (Erdelj, et al. 2017).
In the control and management of forest fires, drones have been significantly used in the detecting of pre-fire instances where the drones are installed with fire detectors. The drones surface the area and report a 3-D video conferencing from the offices where the fire managers monitor the situation and locate any instances of fire before it gets worse and subsequently destroying the forest covers which are habitats to wild animals and other creatures. By detecting any strike of fire in the forests, the drones help in the prevention of any forest fires which have proved to be a real disaster. The civil engineering sector has employed such measures by the manufacturing of the drones which have enhanced and made it easier for the surveillance of disaster-stricken locations. Drones have seen an improvement in the control and management of accidents and hazardous incidences. Forest fires can have a massive impact on the environment noting the dangers of global warming through the destruction of forest covers and the endangering of wild animals which would have no more places to call home (Wolf, 2017).
Drones too have been used in the search and security programs in the case that people get lost in large vegetation like the Amazon forest or collapsed in the sea. Such programs were initiated for instance if people get lost in vast and unknown places in the thick woods or the sea. Drones in this aspect are used to make surveillance over the said location and help in finding the people trapped in the area. It is also applicable if people drown for instance in the Pacific and their site is unknown, drones can be used to locate them and help in securing them out of such places. Technological advancement and the creation of the drones have been a great invention in history because of the many useful applications they can be subjected to at any time. The search and rescue is a very significant operation in most parts of the world because of the increased need for surveillance in case the location is not known (Bartsch, Coyne, & Gray, 2016).
Conclusion
In summary, the advancement in technology in the civil engineering sector has become one of the significant steps in technology. Specifically, the invention of drones has become a great asset in both the agricultural industry and in control of disasters and hazardous situations like earthquakes. Drones since been used in some fields such as: in command of disasters like forest fires, control of floods, and the recording of data and useful information for better future study and prediction. Civil engineering has ever since been a place of innovation and the 3-D Numerical data technology have served to be the best form of technological inventions that have changed the nature and operations of events. Drones are the most effective means any form of technology to manage and taking up information in the most extreme and dangerous situations
