Introduction
Counselling processes requires consistency and the use of different approaches in trying to fix the client's situation. In most cases, some people may not benefit from the treatment or therapeutic processes as a result of failure to reveal essential information that can enable a counsellor in making the right decision. Some counsellors may sometimes decide to end the processes while others can decide to proceed only after the presentation of new or different information. Professional therapists understand the procedures that it takes to deal with the clients who are secretive or those who are not ready to present secretive information. Even though sometimes people may look comfortable in their physical and facial appearance, there is always the need for the psychotherapist to dig deep and find important information that may define an individual situation (Helmeke & Sori, 2012). People come to the counselling programs for different reasons; some want to receive help or assistance on how to get out of their condition while others only want advice to cope with the state of their minds and that which they cannot change. As evident in the case study, the process of therapy may take several months without any success. However, through consistency and the application of various approaches that may be suitable to the client, the whole process may become successful. From the case study above, Nicole Vasquez is reluctant to reveal some of the basic information that may enable the therapist decide on the best counselling technique possible. As a professional psychotherapist with the understanding of the diverse approaches to use, Katherine can apply various approaches to ensure that Nicole is saved from the devastating conditions.
Having the ability to be judgmental will ensure proficiency in the study of the counselling program. Even though some of the students may possess the above skill before the course, there is a need for the learning institutions to incorporate the training programs that enhance judgmental skills. In Nicole's case, Katherine has attempted to apply different techniques and skill to save the situation, but with time the process was becoming more challenging as a result of the miscommunication as lack of consensus between the Counselor and the person under therapy or treatment. In most cases, it is essential for a person to understand the entire situation before embarking on the whole process; also changing the approaches requires an elaborate and an advanced understanding of the previous situations or counselling sessions.
Picking up from the case study, it is necessary for one to reflect on the entire situation and come up with the rights decision and approach to take. In Nicole and Kathrine's case, it would be necessary to reflect on instances within the counselling process that proved challenging and plan how to work on them. Planning is the most important part of the psychotherapy process. In most cases, counsellors require an advanced understanding of the patients and their conditions especially when they cannot fully comprehend their decisions and secrecy. Creation of a new environment and the discussion programs would be necessary in solving Nicole's case. Given that the previous processes have not been successful as expected, it would be necessary to embrace ethics and new questioning approaches to engage fully with the clients. Creating a rapport is necessary when it comes to the situation given in the case study. Given the pressure from the supervisor as well as the client's inability to fully reveal the information that may aid in finding the solution to the entire process, Katherine should create an interactive environment whereby there will be a complete association and sharing of information. From the previous selling, the counsellor has realized basic information including childhood violence that could have defined Nicole's situation. Building on the information that has been presented will best dictate the approaches that can help in the determination of the long-lasting solution to Nicole's case.
To proceed with Nicole's counselling process, it would be necessary to apply four component-Based Psychotherapy (CBP) treatment model components including relationship, regulation, relational parts work, and narrative. In enhancing the counselling program, the above model addresses major issues that would aid in the treatment processes. However, the above processes may sometimes not be undertaken sequentially. With the new session, there is a need for Kathrine to work into the overall treatment before embarking on the entire process. There is a need to express needs and reflect on the previous stories and history. Also, there is the need to improve on the interrogative skills as well as responses, a situation that will guide the entire process.
New Narrative
In the above case study, an essential step in resolving or proceeding with Nicole's case is by creating a new story both for the counsellor Kathrine, and the patient, Nicole. In other words, creating a new narrative while enhancing the progress of the counselling process will be essential. Starting all together in a new story will best define the necessary approaches that may provide a solution in the entire process. Many individuals with traumatic experiences often tend to blame themselves or even pick up self-critical beliefs. People with trauma usually lack story at all. In the new counselling processes, I would help Nicole in creating a new story based on reality and facts. The creation of the narrative is part of the work because the story that we have for ourselves drives the behaviors relationship as well as self-esteem. Working through the trauma can enable one in creating a more realistic story of what occurred. However, the above case may change the way one perceives and treat themselves. The creation of new narratives in the counselling processes creates a new environment that facilitates interaction processes. As the trauma resolves and as the new narratives unfold, a person may begin to perceive themselves as the entire world differently. Through the creation of a new narrative the old self may wither, and as a result, the new self will be formed or born. The newly acquired self may require some assistance while integrating it into the world or the therapeutic process. As a result, the changes that take place while the trauma is being resolved may become awkward in the first place.
In the process of resuming the counselling process, I would come up with the new narrative given the understanding of the basic conditions that Nicole have undergone. Incorporating new stories to change the patient's perception towards their conditions may lead to the revelation of more information that may be essential in the counselling process (In Halpern, In Nitza, & In Vermeulen, 2019). I would formulate the narrative therapy so that it can separate Nicole from past traumatic experiences. I would encourage her to rely on her skills that reduce the problems or the difficulties that she experiences in her life. In life, personal experiences usually become personal stories. I would attempt to give the story meaning, a scenario that will attempt to bring out a personal identity. In most cases, narrative therapy uses the power of the story to enhance the discovery of their purposes in life. Specifically, I would assign Nicole the role of a narrator so that she can reveal her own story.
Developing Relationship
While picking up from the point where the therapy process ended, I would establish a therapeutic relationship between us in critical ways. The counselling process will need to be carefully attended so that the patient feels safe as the interaction progresses. Working with Nicole will be an ongoing project that will help in building the necessary foundation of trust for all the conversation and the advice that will be given. In the counselling processes encouraging a strong relationship is one of the ways of encouraging the revelation of different information. As in the Nicole case, all the previous processes proved to be difficult as a result of the failure to reveal the basic and critical information that the counsellor required in giving advice. As in the earlier cases when Katherine appeared more complex, both in the facial and verbal expression, developing strong is essential in enabling the client to communicate their situation without developing a second thought.
Emotional Regulation
In the counselling process there is the need for the emotional regulation while proceeding with the therapeutic processes, I will ensure emotional regulation to set up a free environment that is essential for the acquisition of information. Traumatic experiences usually involve strong residual emotions; therefore, there will be a need to tolerate different situations to enhance the healing processes. To ensure further participation in the counselling processes, I will ensure the incorporation of the emotional regulation techniques. In other words, I will ensure that Nicole forgets about painful past experiences and incorporate the ideal life situations that may encourage the healing processes. Sometimes being rational may also make the patient enhance counselling processes. Also, the counsellor may find avenues of acquiring information about the client. While continuing with the psychotherapy process in a new environment, I would ensure the incorporation of relational parts works. A sense of empathy is another attribute that I will require to undertake the counselling course at the bachelor level. Counsellors often help people through some of the stressful and difficult moments and therefore, while learning, they need to be able to display empathy (Wehle, 2016). Empathy refers to the ability to feel what other people are feeling. In most cases, effective counsellors need to possess excellent communication skills. On the other hand, even though some communication skills can be honed in the course of studies, it is necessary for one to possess some levels of communications skills before embarking on the entire counselling career. As an individual has have been engaged in several social programs across different locations, I have been able to polish my listening and communication skill, this I believe, will aid the learning process. Working with different groups of people have enhanced my communication skills that can enhance my counselling course at the bachelor level (Wehle, 2016). Additionally, when undertaking a bachelor course in counselling, I will need to have a natural ability to listen and be able to clearly explain the ideas and thoughts to others.
Some of the challenges that might be encountered while working with the client include the difficulty in acquiring secret information as well as the pressure from the supervisor. Changes in schedules, as well as the difficulty in the interaction processes, may also prove to be the challenges while continuing with the counselling process.
